From CBC:

Martin Streek, the Toronto DJ respected for his knowledge of the alternative rock scene, has been found dead in his Toronto home.

According to media reports, Streek took his own life. He was 45.

He had been let go from Toronto popular music station The Edge (102.1 FM) two months ago in a round of downsizing.

He worked for the station for 20 years, hosting Thursday 30 Countdown, the Sunday night Spirit of Radio show and live-to-air nights from Toronto club the Phoenix.

My girlfriend was devastated to hear this, she was a big fan.

He sent a song out to us once as we were listening live from BC. It was a very cool moment.

Sorry to hear this may he R.I.P:(

I'm sorry too-Streek made my Sunday nights listening to CFNY's live Whiskey Saigon broadcasts amazing, like listening to an 1940's live broadcast from a Big Band playing at a ballroom.

As of today, CFNY can kiss my ass as far as my being a listener is concerned.:scream::rolleyes:

That's a shame. I really enjoyed his work when I used to listen to 102.1 the Edge. He had a really deep voice that was perfect for radio. I think it's rather messed up how they fired him at his age after 20 years. He probably knew how hard it would be to find a new job in that situation. :(

It's kind of like Erin Davis and CHFI. She was wildly popular for decades and they got rid of her to get a younger slant. Ratings plummeted. They finally invited her back.

It took nearly a year though. Maybe he should have waited a bit longer.

Why did they let him go anyway? Do we know?

He was likely let go because he was old, and the Edge wants a younger demographic. It's too bad he couldn't have hired himself out to Sirius Satellite Radio Canada-he could have done a show on that network, and be himself. But he was so despondent that he did away with himself.
