Top Five Moments - season 4

For me, this is where Voyager starts to get really good!

1) Day of Honor - the parts where Tom and Belanna are floating in soace together, especially the part where she tell him she loves him (who was surprised I picked this lol)

2) Year of Hell - the order to abandon ship. I always wished this had been the season finale

3) Message in a Bottle - both EMHs working together are great, especially when they are figuring out everything on the bridge

4) Mortal Coil - i enjoy much of this episode. Ethan Phillips is an underrated actor. The scene at the end on the transporter pad particularly is great. Even Chakotay is good in it.

5) One - the scene near the end with Seven halucinating the different crewmembers.

1) Nemesis: The little twist in the tale when the Kradins show up in Voyager's transport room and are revealed as good guys.

2) Nemesis: The Vori language in every scene with them. Fathom that!

3) Scorpion: Kes sitting in the captain's seat. The right place for her!

4) Nemesis: Chakotay when he looks at the Kradin ambassador after being brought back to the ship and his comment to Janeway afterwards: "I wish it were as easy to stop hating as it was to start."

5) Message In A Bottle: When the Hirogen show up for the first time. interesting species, obviously related to or the same species as Marayna (the season 3 episode Alter Ego).

Scorpion- Where Janeway says Scorpion and Chakotay breaks 7's link to the hive.

Nemesis- my favorite episode. Its hard to pick any one scene but the twist is great as is Chakotay's statement about hate.

Year of Hell- Janeway saying goodbye to everyone, especially her hug with Tuvok and glancing at the commander chair, her two closest friends. I also love her finding the watch.

I guess that's five but there are a few others I would add if I had the space.

They have some similar bumps, but a lot of aliens have similar features.

Though it was established in TNG that all life in the galaxy is related and from the same source

That's right but I still think that Maranya looks like a Hirogen or like someone related to them.

There is a very small resemblance in the texture of the skin

 

[Refuge]

"The Gift". Liked seeing how powerful Kes was. Didn't think it should be cause for her to leave.

"Scientific Method". That was kind of a spooky episode, especially seeing what they were doing to Janeway.

"Year of Hell" (both parts). It was a bit gruelling but it resolved satisfactorily and the journey just reinforced how much they relied on each other.

"Living Witness". For the (mirror like) bad Voyager scenes. Janeway was pretty cool.

Nemesis- my favorite episode. Its hard to pick any one scene but the twist is great as is Chakotay's statement about hate.

I totally agree. It was a disturbing episode but one that totally needed the character of Chakotay to navigate. He's a warrior but spiritual too, I think that is his strength. Why he was able to be second in command to Janeway, why later he saw her stance with the crewman from Equinox as being what you don't do, (though my instincts were like her's ). He's actually quite mature and underestimated.

Killing game. The outfits! The acting. A fun two parter

Concerning flight. I like the talk they had on the hill about the sparrow and his limits.

Year of Hell. The moment she's alone with just her watch and her bridge and takes a seat.

Mortal coil. An episode where I see Neelix in a new light.

Hunters-Letters from home.

Now why does Concerning Flight not surprise me.

“Year of Hell” when Janeway says “Time's Up”. Then at the end when Annorax’s wife asks him to walk with her.

“Mortal Coil” Ending with little Naomi dreaming of the forest.

“Scientific Method” Neelix and Chakotay’s conversation while they’re sitting in sickbay.

“Living Witness” The alternative Voyager.

“The Killing Game” where B’Elanna is talking about her holographic baby belly “it even kicks”.

By and large, Season 4 is my favorite season of the show. Star Trek was often at its best when it did big, epic stories. Season 4 gave us 3 in a single season-- "Scorpion," "Year of Hell," & "The Killing Game." I still get warm fuzzies when I think about curling up on the couch while the rest of the family was out of the house and watching UPN's debut of both halves of "The Killing Game" back-to-back.

A few of my favorite lines:

Seven: "The child you spoke of, the girl-- her favorite color was red."
--"The Gift"

Tom Paris: "He thinks that Time has some sort of a personal grudge against him. That's called paranoia, Chakotay! With a hint of megalomania."
--"Year of Hell, Part II"

Doctor: "You really should keep a personal log. Why bore others needlessly?"
--"Message in a Bottle"

Hirogen: "You've bypassed our control! How?!"
Harry Kim: "Go to hell!"
--"The Killing Game, Part I." Harry Kim doesn't get too many badass moments but this is definitely one of them. 8)

Seven: "Don't panic. It's counterproductive."
Doctor: "That's easy for you to say. You're not facing cybernetic oblivion!"
--"One"

Some of my other favorite bits:

Seven's silver outfit. Unfortunately, since it was so difficult to light, it only appeared in 3 episodes. But whenever I think of her, it's the outfit that I think of.

The crazy hologram from "Revulsion." The UPN promos just focused on the Seven/Harry B-plot but the A-story with B'Elanna & the Doctor was pretty great.

The moment when I realized that the alien museum from "Living Witness" was also the room where they Son'a had all their cosmetic surgery done in Star Trek: Insurrection.

Biggest disappointment:
That they used Romulans as the bad guys in "Message in a Bottle" when it would have made a lot more sense for it to be the Dominion. Dammit, even when synergy is handed to you on a platter, you throw it away!

Random nit that I'm just noticing now, 20 years later:
In "The Killing Game, Part II," after Captain Janeway & the Hirogen leader have negotiated a ceasefire, the Hirogen first officer orders all of his people to withdraw to positions that he's pointing to on a map on a table. Thing is, NO ONE ELSE IS LOOKING AT THE MAP! Everyone else in the scene has already turned around and is starting to leave.

[Astrometrics lab]

TORRES: We're boosting the signal gain as high as it'll go. I think we can cut through the alien's jamming signal.
HIROGEN [on screen]: I warned you.
JANEWAY: I apologise for our intrusion. Allow me to explain.
HIROGEN: No explanations.
JANEWAY: Your relay network gave us the unique opportunity to communicate with our people. They are very far away and we're expecting a message back from them.
HIROGEN [on screen]: All messages will be intercepted.
TORRES: He's trying to jam the link again.
JANEWAY: There must be some room for negotiation. Isn't there anything you might accept in exchange for
(They see energy hitting the Hirogen. The transmission ends.)
JANEWAY: What happened?
SEVEN: I generated a feedback surge along our sensor link.
TORRES: You killed him?
SEVEN: It was a mild shock. He will recover.
JANEWAY: And when he does?
SEVEN: He wasn't responding to diplomacy.
JANEWAY: Is the sensor link stable?
SEVEN: Yes, Captain.
JANEWAY: Keep watching for the Doctor. Let me know if our friend gives us any more trouble.
TORRES: Mild shock? Not bad.
SEVEN: Thank you.

ALPHA: It can defeat most hostile environments. I once tracked a silicon-based lifeform through the neutronium mantle of a collapsed star.

In “One”, I only wished that Janeway, beating Seven to the stasis chamber room, could have adlibbed an evil laugh at the end of her first paragraph or two.

It would further illustrate Seven’s mental collapse.

And the ship starts spinning.

Next thing you know,

She’s back in Kansas.
