Top 5 performances in Latex makeup.

I was listening to Reel Time on Cineamagic on XM Radio and the director of the current re-imagining of the Wolfman was on. Joe Johnston talked about how it was important to get a good performance through the latex applications from Benicio Del Toro. This got me thinking about some of the best performances I have seen in latex and makeup.

So, here are my top 5 performances in latex and makeup.

5. Andreas Katsulas - G'Kar from Babylon 5. I always thought that Andreas was actually a better actor under tons of makeup. I think he let himself get more into character.

4. Tim Curry - Darkness from Legend. This is the movie that made me a Tim Curry fan. It lead me to going to Midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture show and to be a avid fan. The makeup done for this also is what got me into making my own latex appliances and getting into SFX makeup.

3.Louis Gossett Jr. - "Jerry" from Enemy Mine. I had seen Louis Gossett Jr. in several things but I was floored to learn that it was him in this. His performance is what makes this movie.

2.Kevin Peter Hall - Predator from Predator. It easy to dismiss this performance as just a guy in a suit. However the nuances that Kevin put into this performance is amazing. You can feel the menace from him, it radiates from the screen.

1.Rene Auberjonois - Odo from ST: Deep Space Nine. Without a doubt the most expressive performances ever given through latex. Also doing it on a weekly basis for years on end and always seeing something more.

What are your top 5?

Here's my Top Five of the Moment (I'm sure to be forgetting dozens of people, including some from other shows :rommie:):

1. Harris Yulin as Amon Maritza, DS9
2. Andrew Robinson as Elim Garak, DS9
3. Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat, DS9
4. Rene Auberjonois as Odo, DS9
5. Casey Biggs as Damar, DS9

In a slightly different category, here are some performances that are notable for their physical dimension alone - an actor creating a convincing non-human character through body movement:

Doug Jones as Abe Sapien, Hellboy
Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Avatar
Andy Serkis as Gollum, LOTR

The best single performance under lots of latex is Phil Morris, and this is the scene. Just wonderful stuff.

I don't really have 5 I can think of, but Andreas Katsulas as Tomalak in TNG was another good example of him getting into a character.

In no order:

1. Max Schreck as the count in 1922's "Nosferatu".

2. Leonard Nemoy as Spock in ... well, if I gotta name it...

4. Data, even if it was just merely make up and styling. He put such effort into that character, though he started giving that up, from my view, at First Contact and was nearly gone at Nemesis.

5. And just for the heck of it: ALF

Andreas, hands down is my #1 as G'Kar.
Roddy McDowall in the Apes movies. Or maybe Kim Hunter. They both got a lot through the rubber.

Rene Auberjonois and Marc Alaimo were great but I always that Michael Dorn was impressive, too. And Jeff Coombs is impressive in any appliance.

Dennis beat me to it. Maurice Evans it is.

He actually was able to convey complex emotions while silent. Most actors have trouble doing that even when they AREN'T in mask makeup.

This is an good list. Mask acting is probably underrated in Hollywood. I also enjoyed the actor who played TOSK in DS9, and PHIL MORRIS was GREAT in Rocks and Shoals!
