TNG to VOY LCARS numbers...?

Ok so what's up with the numbers on LCARS buttons from TNG to VOY? Do they have any meaning or are they just supposed to look technical and complicated? :wtf:

I think it's just supposed to look technical and complicated.

Its only obsessive fans who look that deeply into things, trying to find meaning. I doubt the writers would go to the trouble of designing such an obscure level of detail, for a TV show.

However, we can see the TNG bridge science station on the Voyager -- reusing old set pieces I guess :)

They are totally random. Mike Okuda once said that the viewer will hopefully think they mean something important, when they watch the show on TV, since the detail cannot be made out.

One the other hand, it's a way of distinguishing rows of identical buttons.

After a few days use, the numbers would become familiar to a user. You'd see the numbers on the keys, and instantly know where you were on the keyboard without a second glance.

Well, I have a fully functional LCARS system, and every button label, box label, and key label has an obvious meaning, as you can see from my avatar. The ones on Trek you just have to imagine have meaning. The ones you are referring to are key labels in my system.

Well Not all the buttons have numbers. Some buttons do have real text. Like "Select Mode or Distribution Control..etc" Also you may see some buttons setup like this "JO RAL"

What the number and text mean in the Trek universe
Now on the number versions of the buttons, I felt that starfleet crews could read Binary. I say this, because reading binary could help them read alien controls. A tricorder could find mathematical patterns in the aliens symbols and display it as Binary.

Now I am not sure what the text versions of the buttons mean. It could be Binary translated into text. So 1 would = A 2=B ...etc.

What the number and text mean in the Real World
The number are just numbers, it was a way to fill up buttons so it would look real. Now for the letter versions, like JO RAL. The letters are from the names of crew people, cast members or real life people. For Example JO RAL is JOE RALAT. They took the first two letters from the first name and three from the last. :D

Well I thought it simply could be security coded so aliens couldn't access the controls. But that would make for some short incursions.

Kazon Captain: Engage Warp Drive!
Kazon Subordinate: Um...hey they didn't label their buttons!

One thing that always mystified me was how they could access alien computer systems and jump right into it with the button pushing. I can't even use an Apple that way, and all the crap is labeled in English!

next time, try reading the script before you get to the set....
