TNG Relaunch: What happened to Madden?

Captain Dago

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I'm sure this has been discussed before and I apologize for forgetting but what became of the Cmdr Martin Madden character who was to have replaced Will Riker as first officer of the Enterprise?

It was a deleted scene, so Madden never canonically existed. The people working for Pocket Books could choose to use him or lose him, and they chose the latter. The new first officer is much cooler, anyway. ;)

.
I'm starting to think we should just add this to the FAQ. It's nothing personal Dago, it's just that this comes up constantly now.

Eidt: I think I did see him pop up in
one of the parallel universes in Q&A
when I was flipping through it.

Anybody from Pocket care to comment on the choice?

They'd just say the same basic things Smiley said. Madden wasn't really a character, just the butt of a badly conceived joke that was cut from the film for very, very good reason. There was nothing there to build on, no reason to make use of this minor figure from a scene that wasn't even in the actual movie.

That's cool. I knew I was bringing up an old subject. Thanks for the answers, all.

Also, it made no sense for Worf not to be the first officer, since first officer of the Enterprise is actually a lateral move from where he was on Deep Space 9. To give him a position less than that of first officer would be to demote him, and Worf has done nothing to earn a demotion.

Darn right! Who needs that Madden guy anyways.

I agree with this. I'll never understand why Riker went with Christine Vale and turning down Worf on the Titan series.

I covered this in A Time for War, a Time for Peace. Worf was going to be Riker's XO, but after Data (who was to be the new XO on the Big E) died fighting Shinzon, Picard requested Worf remain on the Enterprise.

(The out-of-the-box reason is that Nemesis ended with Worf summoning Picard to the bridge, which means Worf was still serving on the Big E, since that was after Riker had gone off to Titan. :) )

I do think the A Time for This That and the Other Thing series did a great job tying up all the loose ends cause by Nemesis.

You mean, besides bailing on a critical undercover mission to hold his wounded wife's hand? :klingon:

^ Not to mention, it's been years since that incident, and in the interim he has served with distinction as a Federation ambassador to Qo'noS, helped prevent a war, commanded the Defiant against the Borg, helped save Earth again, and helped stop Shinzon from wreaking havoc on countless worlds, including (yet again) Earth.

I think the glowing commendations on his service record, coupled with his political connections, more than outweigh that one reprimand, for which he wasn't even demoted at the time it happened.

Like the name you used there. :rommie: :guffaw:

I'm repeating what others have already said, but...

1) That incident happened in 2374. He wasn't demoted for it at the time.

2) Nemesis (and A Time for War, a Time for Peace) took place in late 2379. In the intervening five years, Worf was a hero during the Dominion War (among other things, he was the one who alerted the allies to Damar's resistance, a rather major bit of intel), and then served for four years as the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire.

Boy, lots of Worf loyalists in the crowd tonight..

Just playin' a little devil's advocate, fellas. I'm convinced now, OK? :)
