TNG and Later continuity

Just curious, as someone who largely reads books set in the TOS era. Are the other era books as all over the place continuity-wise as the TOS books have had to have been over the years? Or is there great consistency?

The first few TNG books were set in the first season. The introduction of Guinan, and the switching of doctors (Pulaski for Crusher) caused the ST Office to request that Pocket's and DC's lines reflect the current onscreen source material. Poor ol' Peter David had to rewrite his partly-finished first TNG book in incorporate Pulaski. He also got caught a second time, IIRC, having to revise a work (a comic?) to anticipate Crusher's return, IIRC, when he thought he'd be using Pulaski.

Once the TV series ended, the novels becan to be more random through TNG's timeline, just as TOS had done. Essentially, most tie-ins avoid canonical flux areas and, where possible, try to reflect current canonical product.

Similarly, Kes being replaced by Seven of Nine gave Jeri Taylor some heartbreaks (and a long delay) while writing/revising "Pathways". In the final version, Neelix has to "channel" Kes to tell her backstory, and it always seemed rather clumsy to me. But it was a mandate to Pocket that "Pathways" reflect the cast change.

TNG novels in the past few years have tended to be set between movies, eg post FC/pre INS, post INS/pre NEM and are now nearly all post-NEM.

DS9 has tended more to the post-finale time period as part of the so-called relaunch. some other works have been done set in the series (Hollow Men), whilst next year's Terok Nor trilogy willl take place pre-S1.

VGR's had 4 post-finale novels and a trilogy set during the series.

I've already had fun doing two seasons of DS9-R...
