TMP Enterprise modernisation and homage

Belz...

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Well, in honour of Star Trek The Motion Picture's 40th anniversary, here's my attempt to modernise the ship, which is my favourite sci-fi design ever. I wasn't satisfied with the Magellan, so I made a new one. I've started from my 1701-A merger, but it's heavily modified.

UPDATED 2021-02-19.

And here's what it would've looked like pre-refit:

NOTE: Some of the replies to this thread don't make too much sense anymore because I've removed the TOS variant I posted here, and consolidated everything in the opening post since the original links were dead anyway.

I really like that design :) You’ve done a great job!

I’m now wishing there was a physical model / diecast of this for me to acquire!

Angle's too shallow for a flip like that. One'd have to redraw the whole front of them.

(EDIT 2021-02-13: the original post has been significantly updated since them.)

Besides, don't you like the 1701-E? ;)

I like the idea, but the nacelles look too much like the Enterprise-E nacelles for my liking. In the link above, I flipped the front of the nacelles upside down to see what it would look like..

The flip is a vast improvement to my eyes. Love the E-E, but it's a different (neckless) bird with totally different lines, so the "lean back" nacelle fronts work for it. This ship looks so much more balanced with the "lean forward" bussard areas (the angle compliments the neck, creating a pleasing negative space, and the whole thing flows together much better).

I mean, yeah, like you said, the angle might be a bit too shallow, but it still works much better IMHO.

I don't particularly care much for it, no. But specifically, the shape of the engines on your original design looked more like they would fit a refit Sovereign class, and not a refit Constitution-class. It's not that they are too modern (the -E is the most recent Enterprise chronologically, so I understand why that shape would seem to work at first), but that the shape doesn't match the shape of the refit Enterprise's nacelles, whose modernization you were attempting to convey. I'll let the following quote explain better than I ever could:

Love the E-E, but it's a different (neckless) bird with totally different lines, so the "lean back" nacelle fronts work for it. THIS. I couldn't have said it any better myself.

Huh. I still think the angle I used fits the underlying pylons better. The shape of the nacelles also doesn't quite lend itself to the altered angle, in my opinion, with their tapering.

As far as fitting the shape of the original refit, the point of this was to produce my own version, not follow the original's every line and shape. I'm under no illusion that I could do better than Taylor and Probert one way or another.

Anyway, that's what I ended up with.

I'd like tsee your take on an TMP era Planet of the Titans Enterprise. Excelsior underbelly beneath
the Discovery type hull but with, say, the raised Reliant extended hull along the top of the secondary hull instead of the saucer.

Really lovely work on all the designs and variants. Strangely, I don't like the downswept nature of the deflector enclosure but that's just a personal quibble. They are all beautiful designs!
