TMP 4K DE: V'Ger and SFC 3D Models

Now that everyone is enjoying the disc release I can finally show my small contribution to the 4K Directors Edition. I was originally asked to model a new Starfleet Command model for the San Francisco establishing shot, it's only something we see very briefly so it's mid poly and detail level, but is far closer to Ralph McQuarrie's concept that we saw later on and brings things closer to what we accept as 'the look'.

I then took over the re-work of the V'Ger CG model for the reveal as it leaves the cloud. Starting with the original asset from 2001, I ended up rebuilding 90% of the mesh and producing all new texture maps. Unfortunately, due to time and resource constraints I wasn't able to do as much as I wanted in geo, but managed to get an approximation of the surface detail in texture. There was also a real emphasis on capturing the detail around the engine area.

NOTE: I had to remove my renders, I'll re-post them when I get the ok.

I'm a little curious about the coloring on the V'Ger model. In photos of the models and screencaps of the movie, I've seen that the original seems to shift based on lighting between the off-black you have here, and the navy blue of the model's 2001 version. Did you get any special direction or information about the original model that made you settle on black instead of blue?

The patterning in the texturing is really well-done. I've been thinking that if I ever start doing 3D sculpting, the V'Ger exterior is going to be my big, terrifying project. With how regular and symmetrical it is, the BTS photos that have become available in recent years, and the flyover in the movie (now in glorious 4K!), I think there might be enough information to reproduce it.

When I first saw this release, I immediately noticed the surface detail and texturing to VGer when it emerged from the cloud. I downloaded a screen cap and examined it. It was fun to spot all the features from the flyover but at a distance. It's all there! Nice work!

New-ish, it's almost entirely just updating the CG that was done for the 2001 Director's Edition, though there were a couple of new CG shots or modifications on top of the ones that were done then.

It's really interesting and I like your work. Thank you for sharing.

The model I built is coloured very blue (#0F1838 sort of area), the lighting and surface roughness makes it appear black in that shot though. It was deliberately lit quite dramatically too. But you're right, it is navy blue, it's just lighting throwing it off.

I watched the 4K Director's cut for the first time last night and noticed these shots. Well done!

So there was absolutely no possibility of using Bill Sully’s original 1979 San Francisco architectural designs for the 4K release?
