Yes, Praetor... that's the one! And, like the others, I FAR prefer this to what was chosen. Nice work.
I'm glad it was after all,
Bolian. Thank you very much.
I still have a soft spot for this design. I was trying to do something in between the
Galaxy and the
Intrepid and primarily wanted to make sure it would be distinctive when put beside the
Sovereign. I feel that my wish to make it look so distinctly non-
Sovereign yet still 'heroic' (via full saucer, up-swept engines, no pod) ultimately hurt it. But
que sera, I still like it, even if I'm embarrassed by my technical skills at the time I drew it. I should probably redo the drawing itself.
If you or anyone else is interested, my deviantart gallery has all of my sketches and the different 'versions' of it I went through with notes based on what I can remember, including when it had a pointed hull. It's
here.
I started modeling her once, mostly to see if the orthos would translate to look in real life like it did in my head (which it did) but I never finished. (Looong story.) Maybe I should, or convince
MadMan to.

Here's an old WIP render, and yes I know the technicality of the shot is crap, but I'm actually rather pleased how well the form of the ship translated to 3d:
Looking good,
Praetor. I wonder how that would look if the pylons were swept back instead of forward to allow shortening the engineering hull while keeping the nacelles right where they are, even though I do like the forward-swept pylons per se. Or maybe there's some way to do both without turning it into a Nebula clone.
That also made me wonder if someone had made a Sovereign variant in the spirit of the Nebula. I found one here, but I was picturing it as being closer to
Preator's design above but with Sovereign saucer section and the same nacelle size as in
Praetor's design but mounted low, Nebula style.

Thanks,
LCARS. That's pretty interesting. I swept the pylons forward to just be different from the
Sovereign, but some versions that I sketched did have forward pylons and slightly shorter engineering hulls. The one she ended up with always did seem a tad bloated to me.
I keep wanting to try taking the
Nebula-version
Sovereign approach and doing it all over again as a mental exercise. Ironically, after the contest was over, I found a sketch in one of my tabloid drawing books that I must have done when I was like 14 that has a crude
Nebula-style
Sovereign (fighting a Star Destroyer.

)
I need to scan that, because it's largely the take I think I would go from. It's not that much different than the one in the link above, actually. IIRC, I shoved the engineering hull forward a la Akira and then had the nacelle pylons sweeping downward from somewhere around the lower 'platform' of the saucer.
To pod or not to pod? That is the question.
