It's been a while since I did a WIP thread around these parts, but here's a new one. The recent posts on Planet of the Titans have sparked my imagination
This is one of those ideas that's been floating around for a long time: the large Adams/McQuarrie-prise adapted into a carrier. The triangular shape has already inspired the TMP-style Ariel/Frederikstad shuttlecarriers, but this time I want to try to stay as close as possible to the original concept artwork and models.
This interpretation of the McQuarrie-prise owes a lot to Timo's description of the Titan/Spartan carriers that he posted on Flare a long long time ago in a galaxy far away. Maybe I can persuade Timo to show up here
Another source of inspiration is the XB-70 Valkyrie, in particular the deflector housing on the forward part of the secondary hull.
Anyway, here's an image:
Now, I'm not a 3D artist, but in the last couple of projects I've been turning to Google Sketchup to do quick and dirty models. It's a great way to get a feel for the 3D shapes and proportions. The final product will be 2D schematics.
History-wise, think of these ships as 2220s Baton Rouge (and STIX Kelvin?) era. Apart from shuttlecarriers, I can see also see this ship in some kind of medical livery, and later on as industrial transports (with the massive neck and saucer replaced by a smaller crew module). Another idea I'm having at the moment is that the flat area of the top of the secondary hull is a great place to park larger auxilliary vehicles for extra capacity.
As you can see, this is in the brainstorming phase. Comments are welcome.
