Let's ask a different question. If you had to reboot Star Trek and you didn't try to connect your new events to the old universe, what would you have done for STXI?
Personally, I think Orci and Kurtzman were right on the money to tell an origin story. I would have included Number One though. I think Star Trek needs more women in authority. I also would have gotten rid of the miniskirts.
I would have loved to tell a Rendezvous with Rama or Solaris type story. Introduce some aliens/alien craft that is totally otherworldly. Make it have some bizarre effect on human society. I guess I'd go for a psychological thriller.
