What would you do if you could travel back in time? Assassinate Marilyn Monroe? Go on a date with Hitler?

I find this re-imagining interesting and really cool. I also like the whole idea kind of fun.

What other items would you bring back in time and adapt to sell if you could?

Cool photo! Where'd you get it?

I'd like to drop a bug in the Reagan administration's ear about the price of arrogance.

A '70's version of Dance Dance Revolution would be all kinds of awesome. It's funny how the '70's are identified so heavily with wood paneling.

Just take any household appliance, put a wood paneling pattern on it, and presto! It's the '70's! :p

I'd take wireless technology into the past.

"Wires? What wires? The days of endless cords snaking around your living room, getting tangled up with each other are over. Meet Bluetooth and his cousin with the funny name, 802.11. Move your music, movies, and books between your computer and other portable devices without ever physically connecting them! Browse the Internet without being tethered to anything! Don't know what an 'Internet' is? You'll find out soon enough."

Cell phones in the past would be hard to do, cause the cell phone towers would not exist yet, it would be hard to setup the networks and carriers back then.

I would take compact devices like the ipad, media players, gaming devices, and I'd introduce touch screen technology and thin displays way back then. If I could bring thin LCD displays and touch screen back to the 50's let's say, maybe by now we would be on our way to having real holographic projections by now and real paper type displays you can roll up and hang.

I would also take the CPU back in time, the latest for PC, Mac, Arm etc... take them all about in time and let the engineers have at em. Maybe by now we'd be closer to Quantum computing or something, or at least really small and really fast CPUs much faster than we have today.

Wireless technology is a good one to bring back to the past as well, anything that could improve upon transmission speed, distance and signal strength now would be great.

Though cars haven't changed much, other than adding in computer components and design, I'd bring a modern car back into the past. Though they wouldn't have the computer systems to replicate the designs, they could look at a modern car for ideas, inspiration, and perhaps we'd see cars evolved in the now because of it.

I would take all the plans and all the designs for space travel that we have, for every type of ship, and go back and give it to NASA and JPL early, cause our space program is really lagging, and this might change things, if real results were seen sooner like a moon base and regular space travel to the moon.

Most importantly though, I'd take the winning lotto numbers into the past, and win. :D

Cell phones would not be doable mostly because the communications satellites used would not be in orbit yet.

I would take back portable computers, MP3 players with bluetooth technology, PS3/XBOX360/Wii consoles, and a modern television.

Can I go back in time further to make sure the sepia filter, which polluted every photograph taken in the 70s was never invented?

I'd go back to the past and get my parents to buy certain real estate. Then I'd get them to buy stock in a couple of companies... Ka-ching!

Another item....

I'd travel to the early 70's or late 60's and introduce microwave ovens and voicemail.

Yeah, I was afraid there might be some conflict in terminology there. Maybe we can call this stuff Retro70sPunk.

Or DiscoPunk. :rommie:

Cracked.com recently ran a predictably entertaining article on some of the practical difficulties with time travel:

Let's get the obvious out of the way first: One thing time travel movies never address is the fact that the Earth moves. Your time machine can't just move forward in time, it has to be able to travel through space with perfect precision. After all, you have to account for the fact that the planet is flying through space at 70 thousand miles an hour, and you've got to know exactly where it's going to be at the exact moment you arrive in the future. Oh, also the planet is spinning really fast.

They're a little late with that insight. The Solar System is also moving around the galaxy and the galaxy is moving through the universe. And ground level changes over periods of time, too (I think HG Wells mentioned that one, at least).

Another good one to introduce would be GPS systems. Though we get the same obstacle as the cell phones. Imagine bringing back the iPad. They'd think you came from Star Trek!
