So I think it sucks. They could've included Nimoy and made an interesting movie without time travel. As I said in another post, it could easily be him recounting a story from original Enterprise time that related to a current event.

So anyway, knowing it is a part of Star Trek 11, are you glad time travel is involved??

Only two of the 10 Trek films have used time travel. Some of Trek's best moments have involved time travel. I honestly don't see why this is such a huge deal.

It sucks.
If you're going to reboot the franchise, just do it already and be done with it.
Don't try to be cute just to placate the existing fanbase.

The time travel element is what allows them to change the look of things and have it all blamed on the Romulans rather than the film makers. :D

Time travel anywhere is bad. It is filled with so many flaws that leads to plot holes that it is not funny. Trek has some great episodes with time travel, no doubt. But time travel, the way it is explained in Trek, seems so trivial. People can go back in time and actually take people out of said time period with absolutely 0 repurcussions? Unless Trek operates on the predestination theory? I don't know.

I don't think that it'll ruin this movie, but I really wish sci-fi would just stop with time travel or be a lot more strict on the rules with it. I have no idea if the temporal federation exists in this movie, but I bet you anything that like on (VOY/DS9/TNG/TOS) they won't explain why the temporal federation isn't stopping Nero's little vacation into the past.

I wish they wouldn't use time travel. Trek has really over used the concept, especially in Voyager and Enterprise. At this point I think I'd only like it if they Pull a "Bill and Ted" Kirk announces he hates losing and decides after they defeat the enemy, they'll go back in time to leave themselves the tools they need to win. Spock can raise the old eyebrow and McCoy do his smirk and finish the movie with the crew on the ship and Spock asking Kirk how he'll explain this all to Starfleet command.

^Well, that's obvious isn't it: in the changed timeline there is no Temporal Federation. ;)

Edit: sorry, reply to The Emissary's post.

I dislike it as far as the change of the 23rd century look is concerned. Its obvious JJ and co. simply didn't care to respect and replicate the sets and look of the times (admittedly 60's), so they went forth with this idea, which also enables them to not particularly mess with anything continuity-wise.

Its a fale-safe solution, allowing the filmmakers to both tread unexplored territory but in a different tapestry, and to design the thing as if nothing came before.

In other words, a hack job.

While I am not against time travel stories in general, they do seem to hide dangers.

I would prefer time travel was not part of the movie, but hopefully Abrams, Orci and the rest have made it work.

I'll know for sure in May if it was good or bad, since the info we have at this point is not enough.

Well in that case, this is a *good* change. :p

But I thought the temporal Federation was protected from changes in the timeline. Their tech. must really suck.

Time travel has always been a major theme in the show and the movies. In fact, some of the most classic episodes from the original series revolved around either it or a setting that may as well have been time travel such as the Squire of Gothos, Patterns of Force or A Piece of the Action. I honestly don't know why so many so-called fans get their feathers ruffled up over it.

I admire what they're trying to do with the new movie. They've even gone out of their way to insure that the hardcore fandom has an "out" explaining all the differences, one that's completely and utterly valid thanks to the Next Generation's episode Parallels.

So not only are they trying to recapture the magic of the original series in context with modern times and audiences, but they're making sure the older fans aren't totally left in the cold. Yet all they receive is hate and criticism for it. It's embarrassing and even makes me ashamed to be a fan.

We don't know yet. Watch the goddamn movie.

None of those episodes involved time travel.

edit - just read "may as well have been"
