"Time Squared" - Visual Effects

I just rewatched "Time Squared" on DVD, and I thought I'd point out how good the visual effects were in this episode!

The split-screen effects with the two Picards were quite convincing. My favorite split-screen shots were:

1. Future Picard gets up from the biobed and exits sickbay. Behind him to screen left is present Picard, and behind him to screen right is Troi. After future Picard leaves, present Picard follows him out. Synchronizing this action must have been nightmarish.

2. Interior turbolift shot showing future Picard enter, followed by present Picard.

3. Various shots of the Picards conversing while walking side-by-side in the corridors.

The new shots of the Enterprise were fun, too... and they utilized the beautiful six-foot filming miniature!

The energy vortex effects were fun as well.

Watching this episode on my 65" HD TV also made it abundantly clear that TNG is probably more in need of a "remastering" than any other series -- TOS included.

Do the original 35mm film elements even exist any longer?

I think the scenes with the two Picards were really sold by Stewart, though. He played future Picard as disoriented, cryptic, and more than a little creepy.

At least some do: The Enterprise finale used footage from a Season 3 TNG episode taken from the original elements.

That was a great episode. Until that one aired I hadn't settled on which TNG character was my favorite. Afterwards, it became Picard and I never looked back.

Eh? I thought that all of the shots in TATV were from the beautiful new CGI model of the E-D.

All the exterior shots, yes. But the scene in Ten Forward used footage from "Ménage à Troi" so we could see the whole room, since they only actually rebuilt a small portion of it. Unfortunately, they didn't notice that Riker was already in that borrowed scene, and so you can see two of him if you look close enough. You can also see a couple Ferengi there too, though there certainly weren't any onboard during "Pegasus"!

Again, this reinforces the needed remastering of TOS, but also its very true that STNG will need to be remastered in order to look good on larger screens or HD.

I agree ALL the FX in Time Squared were good, and although it didn't have the original intent of Q being behind the events, I thought TS was an excellent look at Picard's command abilities.

Is that him sitting with the Ferengi by the window? http://ent.trekcore.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=99&pos=21

It must be; they're playing chess, and I'm pretty sure that that's the Betazoid representative from the episode, too. Whoops!

I had to be sure so I made a few screen caps of my own. That is definitely him!

This is the best shot I could get with both Rikers in it at the same time.

Back on topic, I thought this was a good episode too from what I recall. It's been years since I've seen it though.

It was one of the best of the second season; that's for sure. S2 was a very hit-or-miss season.

^ Whoops; I missed that you were talking about Menage a Trois. It was a good episode, as was Time Squared.
