So far we haven't received word of the show getting cancelled or renewed as Season 5 near its end and I think the show should end with this season. To me, it's losing gas and though the Dexter character remains interesting as ever along with his relationship with the new character Lumen, everything else is just screaming for an impending resolution. It's like a car straining under pressure once it reached the limit of its speed. It's just so much it can take before falling apart. It's time to call it quits.
I don't see why there should be a Season 6. Yes, there are those of you who want to see more of Dexter. Hell, there are those of you who wish Dexter can go on for nine seasons. But this show isn't like Law Order or CSI. It's a definite story with a beginning, a middle, and hopefully an end like the Sopranos or the Shield. To push it to go on further would be less about the quality of the story and the characters and more of our unwillingness to let go of a good thing that reached its time to rest. I would hate it to go past its prime like Weeds, a show in which once likeable characters have been reduced into toxic, damaged people that people are drawn to watching in hopes they'll return to that likeability which is less than likely.
