TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finished

It's been several years, but the guy who has been working solo on animating an 80s-style Japanese Anime version of a space battle from the Star Wars universe has finally finished it.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of the music he commissioned for it, and think something more in line with a frenetic orchestra score would have been much better. There's no dialogue, but there are some sound effects.

The look, movement and choreography of the whole thing, though, is just so frikkin cool. I would watch the shit of an entire series like this: less CG cartoony proportions and light-hearted atmosphere and more retro anime techno-realism from the perspective of the awesome TIE pilot corps during the Rebellion Era.

Anyway, here you go. Enjoy! I'm off to go play through my TIE Fighter campaigns once again!

Yep. That's visually outstanding. Nay, brilliant. :techman: :bolian: :mallory:

And the music is god-awful.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

the music adds to the 80s anime vibe.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

The Music reminds me of the 1986 animated Transformers movie.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

That wannabe-metal garbage just about ruined one of the better Star Wars animations I've ever seen. Seriously, whose brother's band is that? Fucking awful.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

Prince Lotor is an Imperial Admiral. Cool.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

I'm not going to say the music is great, but it fits with the animation style. And the animation itself? WOW. This guy spent four years doing this!

Good thing I still have TIE Fighter installed, I have an itch to scratch now.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

I think I'd have preferred more traditional music, but other than that, I enjoyed it.

Actually as a fan of 1980ies era anime - the music was VERY MUCH appropriate. The art style and general action also seemed very influenced by SDF Macross/Robotech (in the U.S.) to me.

Still a very well done and fun piece.

Edited to add (to avoid a double post):

Prince Lotor is an Imperial Admiral. Cool.

Actually the Imperial Admiral reminded me more of the character of Char Aznable from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

I could do without the constant flashing to the "pilot inside the armor" for all the TIE pilots.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

Watching again, I really appreciate all of the little details like the preflight tasks, the cockpit setups to match the games, and the sensor images showing optimum ranges and firing arcs.

If I were him, I'd use this as a resume piece to get into working with Disney on future SW projects, or with an Anime production company. The talent and dedication is obvious.

Also, the mission briefer from the game makes a cameo during the emergency brief when the second wave of fighters is launched. So cool. I was also hoping I'd catch the Emperor's emissary wandering through the background dispensing the secret objects, but he either isn't there or I just missed him.

I didn't like the TIE pilot helmet cutaways to show their faces at first, but in order to follow the three 'hero' pilots (young man in TIE Fighter, older vet in TIE Interceptor & woman in TIE Bomber) through the battle where identical ships are getting blown apart constantly, I accepted it. Were this a series following these pilots, you'd need a visual cue like this or the audience would be constantly questioning who was doing what and who had just died. Especially, since TIE pilots don't wear identifying patches, different colored helmets or markings on their fuselages (which would be written in Aurbesh and not English, anway). I don't mind it now.

I don't have to like it.

I thought it was an interesting choice that helped us identify with the pilots. I liked it.

That was awesome and kudos to the effort.

Everything was there.. the animation, picture composition and even the obligatory swarm missile attack

I love dedicated fans no matter what they do.

That score was terrible. I didn't really care for the look, but I think it deserves better music than that, so I'm going to make some.

EDIT:
I'll start the first part of the music Friday. Hopefully I'll be able to let everybody hear it shortly after that.

I couldn't make it through the whole thing. The music just ruined it for me.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

Watched it without sound. I can imagine the standard sounds from TIE Fighter well enough as it is. Looks fine.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

Otaking also has a decent Doctor Who anime tribute which is pretty neat. (He's not a fan of the 2005-current series though as one might notice). Although those videos no longer seem to be on his channel they've probably been mirrored a lot.

Regarding TIE fighter itself, it was a pretty epic game IMO. It also was I believe the first game to really integrate the Expanded Universe stuff (Now Legends) into it's continuity, such as Thrawn and some of the spacecraft like the Interdictor.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

It also seems like they went out of there way to try and squeeze every anime cliché in to it, even those that didn't really belong.

Like when the guy licked his lips ... I was done.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

I admit, that was a pretty stylish video, though I had to turn the sound down to minimize the rock soundtrack. I wonder how long it'll take for others to fan-edit in some more appropriate/orchestral music. :p
