'Thundarr the Barbarian' early 1980-82 animated series

The first episode of Thundarr is on the Saturday Morning Cartoons, the 80s Volume 1 DVD and there's a 15 minute featurette on it too.

The opening sequence to this show, with the burnt-out husks of New York and the cracked moon, is one of my most vivid childhood memories.

Mine too.

As is Gemini, the creepy villain who could change faces. His evil face really freaked me out.

Ditto. I can almost quote the opening narration verbatim. It is so entrenched in my memory.

And I will always remember Gemini too. That dude scared the crap out of me as a kid! I can also mentally recall the sound of both of his voices and the noise his head made when he switched faces. That sound effect has been used in cartoons for ages and every time I hear it the first thing that pops into my head is Gemini.

As for the movie... I will be operating under the same conditions I always do when it come to this sort of thing: I will not form an opinion either way until I actually see the movie. It could be excellent or it could be another HeMan/Aeon Flux/Scooby Doo catastrophe. If they follow the cartoon and make full use of the history, characters and world created there I think they will have an amazing movie on their hands.

The videos are complete and the transfer was clear and crisp. The menu structure was generic but adequate. Think very high quality bootleg from VHS tapes and you'll have the idea of what you are getting. No extras, but all the original Thundarr that was ever created in a professional package.
The tranfers are clean, and the sound is stereo. Lovin' it!
No remastering will not make it a buy for me. They could have done the restoration effort that Rhino video gave to the Transformers season 1 box set (2002). Maybe I'll rent it via Netflix.

My absolute favorite moment of this series is where he was in London, battling a tribe of Werewolves, led by a guy named whose name was pronounced as "Zevon."

I might have to look into this, I didn't really care for the Transformers remastering so this might be alright, I've wanted this series for a while. It's a shame it's not a regular release.

I always maintained the extremely fannish theory that Thundarr's world was Second Earth to the Thundercats' Third Earth, and that maybe Thundarr faced Mumm-Ra early in his career--maybe even being the one that first killed him, forcing him into the state we saw on the later series. IIRC, the moon on TC was also split asunder--maybe an homage.

Second Earth was the modern day. First Earth was the pre-history of myth.
