Having seen this page (http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Treblenk_IV) made me wonder if Spock's reference to the last three months is ever said anywhere to be a single thing, or a series of incidents (the episodes just prior to "Shore Leave").

Looks like, in the draft script, it was supposed to be a three-month mission. Wonder what kind of situation would keep a starship occupied for 5% of its five-year expedition? Maybe this is why that didn't make the final teleplay. The Enterprise did accomplish a lot in the eps before SL.
They spent a couple of months using their impulse drive to head back to Amerind to save Kirk and shoot the asteroid in "The Paradise Syndrome". Granted, that wasn't planned, but due to a warp drive damage.
