I'm wondering what season one apparel was made of? It looks kind of velourish but, that didn't come around til the 70's, no?

■The velour uniforms used in this episode had shrunk since they were first used in "The Corbomite Maneuver". According to Bob Justman and Herbert F. Solow's book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, the velour uniforms shrank every time they were cleaned. The actors' union requirements specified that the costumes had to be cleaned daily.

Velour fabric has been around since the Forties. The eighteen-forties, that is.

I noticed that the Memory Alpha excerpt is from the "Mudd's Women" entry. Did all the costumes shrink? (As if Theiss wasn't already a challenge for the female cast.)

The women's uniforms definitely shrank. There are cases in the first season where the hemline didn't cover the whole buttocks. Apparently, Roddenberry insisted that skirts be shorter than Theiss would have wanted, and then the velour shrank on top of that.

Well, that explains why Shatner's gut seems to get bigger and bigger...

And don't forget, when they went to San Francisco in the next film, he switched...to a leather suit.
