Those cards in the dvds (region 1)

You know those postcards they put in (most) Doctor Who dvds from BBC Video (going to a PO Box in Clinton, IA)?

What's the point of filling them out?

I've got several dozen Who dvds now, and have filled out and sent in those cards. I've never heard from BBC Video. I haven't gotten any related spam or anything from them. Since they know how many are sold, it's not like they use the cards to track that. So, now I wonder ... What's the point of those cards?

They put your information on a marketing database - that is of value in itself.

They probably have not gotten around to sending any mailers yet.

I used to fill them out all the time. (They came with the VHS tapes for a while, too.) Usually, I'd write how I wanted to see such-and-such on tape or DVD. And when North American Who fandom was up in arms and was trying to scuttle the bare-bones DVD releases, I wrote that address and said, "No, I want the bare-bones DVD releases, dammit!" :)

I used to fill out that I wanted Jonathan Creek on DVD, things like that, too.

I should explain the bare-bones DVD releases bit.

Back around 2001 Warner Home Video announced plans to release, alongside the new VHS releases, a bare-bones DVD release of that same story. So, Attack of the Cybermen would have been available on the same date on VHS and DVD. Who fandom basically said to WHV, "Fuck no! We want Restoration Team-produced stuff with fuckloads of extras... or nothing!" And Warner Home Video backed down.

I used to send those cards in all the time. Eventually I started getting the BBC Video catalogue. I'd assume there was a connection, but it sure took a while.
