Thomas Riker got no love

Fedaykin

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I know they can't close every thread on these shows, but I always kinda wondered what became of him. Sisko swore he was going to get him out, and he was never seen again. Dude was sittin' in jail while his double was out maxin and relaxin and making sweet love to his woman.

Was this covered in some novel? I don't remember reading anything further on him.

It was Kira who swore to get Tom out.

I can imagine at the end of the series as the camera pulls back from Jake and Kira at the window and the station she says to Jake; "Y'know it seems like I should remember something but for the life of me I can't figure out what the heck it is."

Robert

I suppose it could've been possible that he either escaped during the Dominion War or was released after the conclusion. I imagine that there was quite a bit of chaos during the bombardment from the Alliance fleet so I like to think that he either escaped or was released at some point. Its also possible that he could've been killed as well.

Imzadi II: Triangle covers his escape, as I recall. It's been quite a while since I read that.

Yeah, Tom gets screwed pretty bad. He didn't even get the promotion that Will got for his actions on the mission that created Tom, DESPITE the fact that they were ONE person at the time and he clearly deserved just as much credit.

As noted above, Triangle: Imzadi II tells the story of Tom Riker's escape during the late 3rd season. The book ends with Tom on the run.

However, the Cardassians recapture Tom, as he's in their custody at the end of the sixth season. (See the Millennium trilogy.) And Bob Greenberger's recent A Weary Life has Tom in Cardassian custody immediately prior to First Contact.

There's also a comic story that Malibu did where Sisko is able to visit Tom Riker in custody.

Together with a friend I once wrote a German fanfic where Tom Riker escapes the Cardassians shortly after the events in What You Leave Behind and seeks asylum on DS9. He joins the Bajoran Militia and (once again) gets romantically involved with Kira.

Ah, good times ...

^ No, I'd rather not go into that. This was years ago. The writing is horrible. You'd only laugh. But I'm flattered you are interested. :)

^ Only between Kira and Riker. ;)

The more I think about it the more details spring to my mind: We let Kira handle her loss of Odo; Nog became a bigger character; we had a whole episode where all characters were trapped inside of Nog's mind (with the help of the Romulan mind probe [from Extreme Measures]); some Cardassians formed their own version of the Maquis as a way to protest the peace with the Federation; we introduced a new foe ... I think I'm going to review those stories just now.

I read in the Making of DS9 Companion that one of the storylines the writers didn't want to revisit was the one involving Tom Riker. I don't know why but they just didn't want to do it.

They should have revisited it. Defiant was a great episode, it brought in NG viewers who disliked DS9, and both Riker were cool. Given his Trek track record I'm sure Frakes would have done it at some point if asked.

I would have LOVED to have seen Tom Riker back in a Starfleet uniform (LCDR maybe? ) during the Dominion war. :)

He was one of those characters whom i'd always felt, got totally screwed. I would have loved to have seen what became of him. I always liked how different he was to Will.

Well, there's always the possibility he could show up in the DS9 relaunch novels -- frankly I'm surprised that hasn't already happened!

yeah, I liked Tom way more than I ever liked Will.

Agreed. Tom had 'tude! :techman:
Course he did... the boy got screwed up one way and down another. Not only was he abandoned on a planet, but after they saved him, he had no possessions, no promotion (that E's Riker received for the same act of gallantry, and went from being a senior officer (I assume) to being lucky to be posted on a ship!

Screw that! I'd be pissed off too!

But in a nice little bit of continuity, Will Riker comments to Worf in First Contact that the defiant is a "tough little ship" (to which Worf scowls, "lttle?"), which is exactly what Tom Riker said about her. I was pleased by that.
