Maybe one of the reasons that Trek does not appeal to the majority of the population is that it has not grown. It is soooooo rooted in the 1960's.
Trek needs......
1. better visuals. Lets see some graphic violence. Some blood from time to time.
2. Starfleet needs to be more of a military organization. Starfleet works to maintain peace through strength. It needs to be a group that is not afraid to ruffle a few feathers from time to time.
3. Some nudity, profanity, and a "popular" soundtrack.
I believe that incorporating these elements will turn Trek into something that all will agree is fitting for the society that we are all lining in today.

Your premise is all wrong. The solution to making a better franchise is to make the future as flawed as today?
1. You would rather make the future more bloody. Well that would insure that families don't take their children. That will kill Trek in the long run.
2. A future where Republican politics have taken over? What kind of future it that? Sounds like the Klingons have taken over in your fantasy.
3. Again nudity and profanity will insure parents don't want to pass Trek on the their children. A popular soundtrack will date it as badly as if it were the 1960's.
The reason Star Trek works is that it looks beyond today...
"I believe that incorporating these elements will turn Trek into something that all will agree is" cheesy, greasy and sleezy. And not the kind of future I want. :vulcan:

You find a way to get that movie made, and I'll definitely watch it. Good luck with that.

Hey, they make those kinds of movies for you already. You want that kind of movie, then go watch Alien series or Starship Troopers. The moment Star Trek does most of what you listed is when it will sink. Star Trek is about ideas not gore/ or songs by Sheryl Crow.

So...no..I totally disagree. I'll take a WRATH OF KHAN over ALIENS3 anyday of the week....

In answer to the original poster, there is blood from time to time. Not everything has to be a gorefest of monumental proportion and not everyone is interested in seeing that sort of thing. How exactly does it serve the story.

Starfleet ruffling feathers...well considering the ideals they're protecting that doesn't fit. There were enough questions in DS9 about some areas of Starfleet/The Federation and how they really differed from their more aggressive neighbours. Not every power is out there to have a conflict because they simply can. In any case Starfleet's goal is armed exploration and defense unless they're backed into a corner.

As for the third point, the popular soundtrack is a guaranteed way for me (and possibly others) to avoid the movie. It's a Space Opera type thing, so lets have the epic and swelling music rather than some annoying little one hit wonder pop tart just because she's the flavour of the second.

The nudity and profanity are things that aren't needed for a good story and should be used in moderation. In any case what's wrong with trying to create something that will appeal to more than one generation?

TOP says it's the only way Trek will survive. No its the only way that some mass produced, how is it different from any other schlok out there franchise with Trek slapped on it hoping people will consume it and not ask questions would survive.
