"This is CityTV... Everywhere."

This thread may not get many posts out of anyone who's not from Ontario or has never lived there, and that's okay. I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. Mark Dailey, longtime news anchor at CityTV in Toronto died yesterday from complications from cancer, which he had been battling since 2004. Born in Ohio in 1953, he'd been reporting news in Toronto since '74 and on City since '79. I was born in '84. As a loyal viewer I've heard his voice more days of my life than I haven't. That's because he was also the voice of the channel. "CityTv...Everywhere." The channel's tagline, spoken almost every hour for 3 decades in his distinctive baritone. For Canadians who never saw him on City Toronto, you definitely heard him on your regional City channel. He was a nice touch of home when I moved to Edmonton, even if he wasn't on the news anymore his voice was still doing the promos. A welcome bit of continuity. He's one of those guys you wouldn't miss until they're gone they were such a staple. He'll be missed by me.

It's always tough when you lose those "voices" They have been a part of your life for as long as you can remember....they seem larger than life. I haven't lived in Ontario for 30 years. I honestly can't say if I would know his voice. The closest I can think of from my experience is Ed Whalen. A staple in Calgary. I can still hear his voice to this day.

Sorry that you have to live in Edmonton, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

It was a bit of a shock. I'd heard he'd had and beat prostate cancer, but I didn't know about the kidney cancer until his death was announced last night. God speed, Mark.

It could be worse. Much worse. He could be living in Calgary.

As for the OP--I never knew the man's name, but I remembered his voice as soon as I read the thread title. I'm sorry to hear that he died.

I'm sorry to hear of Dailey's passing. :( My family moved to Toronto in 1982 when I was 13, and I watched a lot of CityTV over the years. Dailey had one of the most distinctive voices I've ever heard.

He did the Charity Auction a couple of times for a convention I used to work on - alas, it was before I started working on it, and so I missed the chance to meet him. He had a wonderful voice - perfect for voiceover work.

Oh wow...that's sad news. I always liked the "City TV...everywhere" collage of your city. Always wondered who did the voice.

This comes as a surprise. He was also the voiceover that introduced movies on CityTV and he'd usually include some sort of humorous remark or quip about the movie, almost like Kevin Nealon's Subliminal Man. He was a real fixture and will be missed.
