The figures are out and Star Trek into Darkness finished third at the theaters this weekend. The movie earned $47,000,000 for the holiday weekend; just behind The Hangover Part II, which earned $51,214,000. The number one earner this weekend was Fast & Furious 6, which earned $120,000,000. So far, Star Trek into Darkness has earned [...]

Someone I know has said there will not be another movie due to how STID has done & the studio will only back a tv show. Not sure where this comes from because I did search & haven't seen anything saying this but it seems that is a bit of a leap. The film hasn't done F&F 6 numbers but I wouldn't call it a failure.

Anyone else hearing this rumor?

I would think so. Someone @ Paramount got too excited about the potential $$, maybe Quark was the one projecting $100 mill opening weekend.

Checking BoxofficeMojo you can see the foreign numbers haven't been updated in quite some time. Hell the last time it says the UK's numbers were updated were 5/12/2013, and it's nearly June. I'm sure domestically STID will do more business. Probably level out around 225 million. Overseas may push STID for a grand total of 400 million world wide. Hopefully.

Yeah, I see it as a studio exec saying "Ooh! This is so good, we could do a hundred million!" and somebody running with it.

Quite honestly, I'm thrilled it's doing so well. Sequels can be iffy at the box office.

And that person is full of it. The film hasn't even been out two weeks. It's matching pace with the 2009 film domestically and outperforming it worldwide.

Well, I saw it a second time last night so there is another $10.25 towards the movie's earnings :) I dunno what everyone's complaining about I thought it was a decent movie.

So I guess I'm partally to blame for the poor box office earnings, the theater I've seen it in (thrice now) I've seen it in the morning before work (10:30 am or so). Those tickets are only $5.75. Note to self: quit being a cheap bastard & see Star Trek only in pricier theaters.
