Things You Hate About Trek (of late)

John Picard

What are some of the aspects of either the writing, plot, or in general that drive you absolutely nuts? This is not a "CANON VIOLATION" type thread, but one where (hopefully) the writers of Trek could learn a thing or two.

My gripes:
Time Travel -- it's an overused plot device riddled with flaws and is sometimes coupled with a reset button. That completely takes away from the purpose of the story. SIDEBAR: Abrams handled in well in Trek 2009.

Aliens:

  1. It seems like 90% of the aliens in the galaxy have superior strengh over humans, yet in a fight the humans seem to prevail.
  2. The other aliens in the galaxy have a lifespan almost double that of humans. I think the only species in Trek that didn't were the Ocampans.
  3. Alien species that have advanced technological development yet still have predominant primitive instincts or defense mechanisms (ie Dr Phlox)
Alien Ships -- I am sick and tired of the Federation encountering an alien or adversary that has a ship of impossible proportions and ludicrous design. Two prime examples are Shinzon's Scimitar and Nero's Narada. I don't care if the Narada was a mining ship, the size was ridiculous. What's with the wild appendages coming off of the ships? It looks ridiculous, not to mention the use of vast open architecture with narrow walkways and enough armaments to arm an entire planet. Should I even mention how those same ships always have a dark interior with light provided by free standing torches? Come on

how come starfleet always saves the day?

it would be good if they lost atleast once.

Miniskirts going out of fashion after 2364--it just totally depresses me more than anything that there are only catsuits to look forward to...

Lazy writing -----> massive plot holes

Time Travel (They ought to just change the name to 'Time Trek')

Giving every alien a lifespan 2-5x that of humans so they can regurgitate them in the 24th Century. Klingons as JMF wrote them only lived about 40-50 years. I liked that about them- time was even more pressing an issue for them than it was for humans, and a short lifespan means less chance to develop wisdom. Klingons living 200 years probably wouldn't be nearly so warlike.

The mess that left CreationEnt as the lone and very expensive organizer of TrekCons in the US.

The dumpimng of the sets and props by the studio.

What I would like to see is a Federation where several races came together, not a human led organisation (a.k.a. empire) where few aliens would join starfleet for a lack of better opportunities on their own world. Worlds JOINS the Federation as a member world, starfleet becomes their military, equally.

I liked that top science fiction writers of the era contributed TOS scripts and wrote novels. There's big a big gap between where Star Trek and written science fiction have gone in the last 30 years . . . It would be cool if say, the likes of Charles Stross and Cory Doctorow wrote Star Trek stories. I dunno why they would want to, but just sayin'.

In fist-fights, it only takes 1 or 2 punches to completely knock someone out. Does everyone in the Trek universe have extremely low blood pressure or something?

And no one defends themselves. They just stand and wait for the next punch. Most annoyingly in Way of the Warrior when the Klingons, going back to their old Ultraviolent ways, stand and take shoots from a tiny little woman.

I would have liked to have seen more Crossover.

We had three separate shows happening in the same universe and almost no crossover.

I mean sure we have a little bit here and there, like the first episodes of DS9 and Voyager, but I would have liked to have seen a lot more.

How come we never saw any of the crews working together? Where was the Enterprise-E during the dominion war? etc

She was patrolling the Neutral Zone, remember? I do agree that more crossovers would have been better.

There were also crossovers in the TNG episodes Birthright Parts I and II and Firstborn.

My biggest biggest gripe with Star Trek as a whole is the ridiculous forehead of the week aliens.

This unfortunately is carryover influence from Star Wars.

Take a guy, slap some goo on his face, and voila! instant alien.

This was made all the more ridiculous in the episodes where human characters were "surgically altered" to look like alien characters. First of all, did anyone notice how to "surgically alter" a human character always meant "adding shit to his/her face"?

The only time a character "subtracted" from his face what when Dukat was "surgically altered" to look Bajoran.

Not to mention the ridiculousness of the ease of surgical procedures in the 24th century. There's zero pain, there's zero healing time, there's zero scarring left. That's off topic though.

Back to the Aliens. The forehead alien concept became so ridiculous in fact, that we are supposed to believe the Vidiians are sick reflected in the way they look, yet you see a race like the Nausicans, and they look even worse, yet they are supposed to be "normal" for their race.

Yeah, no thanks. StarGate was much smarter in that they used the forehead alien concept sparingly.

Another thing that pissed me off specifically about TNG is how:

A. We hardly ever got to see the Enterprise D whoop some ass. The only time it ever did was in AGT.

B. We never ever saw Data kick ass. We are told several times that he has had combat training. I would have loved to see his combat skills used with his Android strength.

A lot of DS9 irritated me, too much to list. Not sure which one is my least favorite series, DS9 or Enterprise.
