Things you hate about the games you love…

Or what would you fix about your favorite games?

To tap my recent memory I’ll start with Batman: AA

I had a great time with the game but there are things that really bugged me.

1. I hate being able to see things that I can’t get to yet because I don’t have the acquired tool or skill yet to get them. So many times at during the game I could see the question marks but could open a door or get high enough to open a vent or whatever.

2. It felt like most of the game I had to stay in detective mode. The game had awesome graphics but staying in detective mode so much whitewashed them and I didn’t get to enjoy them as much as I would have liked to.

3. Skills, Tools and such through XP.

Second is Halo: ODST

1. Like Batman, It felt like most of the game I had to stay in Night vision mode. The game was so dark for the most part I had to stay in Night vision mode. The thing that really annoyed me was that going from the light outside to the dark inside you had to keep jumping back and forth.

An older Game but I play it a LOT is Gears of War 2
I’m not gonna get too much into the Multiplayer because the list would be a bit long so I’ll just comment on the single player.

1. Velcro Boy. I I like the whole duck, dodge, dive and such but good GAWD it can get annoying as hell to stick to EVERYTHING! Especially during a firefight when you are trying to get out of the way and you just stick to the wall IN the way.
2. Roadie Run.
Why is it so much slower than the first game?

Some things that I would like to see updated in most games are.

1. Collecting 9000 things for power ups, shields, skills and all the other things they use that crap for.
If I’m a super secret special agent I want to be dropped into my mission with all the tools, weapons and skills I need.
I don’t what to have to collect so many orbs or XP to go to the black market to get my guns and gun upgrades.
I don’t want to stop my mission so I can go see Master FA Que to teach me to be a badass.

2. Give me a strategic difference between Easy and Extremely hard mode.
I don’t want to be in GOD Mode on easy and die when I stub my toe on Extremely hard mode.
Make easy mode have 10 enemies and hard mode have 30 or have 10 plus 5 more boss type enemies or something.

3. Speaking of Bosses.
Why do so many games have to have a Boss level? Can these guys come up with something newer?

So what about your favorite games? What would you fix?

Starcraft:

- Exchanging resources with your allies.
- Higher resolution so that you can zoom out and see more of the map.

I guess we'll be getting all of this in SC 2 but there you are :).

Tomb Raider: Underworld

- I hate the fact that there probably won't be a direct sequel...

Half Life 2:

- The music. I loathe the music in this game, and I'm thankful there's only very little of it. This game is so beautiful. And I feel the music is such a letdown in comparison.
- Episode 1: Too dark. I far, FAR prefer the outside levels of the game and/or those where you're inside but you've still got that beautiful sunlight shining in.

Super Mario Kart

- More Battlemode Courses: This was IMHO the best mode in the entire game and they only had four maps...

Every CoD game - infinite spawning enemies and grenade spam. I play these games on Casual now because I know that the game is designed to be cheap on harder difficulties.

COD 5-the tiny bit of "immunity lag" when you drop a guy into last stand-and he can still shoot you, but you can't touch him for half of a second or so. Grrrrrrr....

HALO 3- Watching guys walk right over exploding grenades without getting hurt. Double Grrrrrrrr......

Crimson Skies- in Vs mode, the damn barrel roll into a mountain glitch where your orientation suddenly shifts and you can't see the mountain(c'mon, it's a friggin' mountain!) until its way too late to correct. *gnashes teeth*

Mass Effect - Inventory system. Everytime I feel like replaying the game, within 10 minutes I remember how annoying the inventory system is and I stop playing.

Delta Force series:

enemies who die from being shot in the frigging arm.

enemies who shoot me when i can't even frigging see them with the sniper scope.

not being given an option to have a Stinger or some other shoulder fired SAM to take down helicopters.

DF Xtreme 2: they nerfed the AT-4. *gnash*

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- Though revolutionary for it's time, the targeting and camera system stands out as really fidgety, now. The addition of user-controlled camera in subsequent games really makes it stand out how poor the camera was in this game.

Kingdom Hearts- The damn Gummy Ship segments.

Any RPG- Hitting a brick wall of a boss and having to spend hours level grinding in order to beat it.

any JRPG that ups the difficulty at a certain point and bosses that force to grind because of cheap attacks

Fallout 3 for not having a longer main quest

Mass effect-
Stupid inventory
lift load times

Dead rising - for no saves on survivor mode

Am I the only one who wasn't bothered by Mass Effect's inventory system?

I was more annoyed by the lack of diversity on the uncharted worlds, and the main quest's relative brevity compared to the time you can spend exploring planets that have no bearing on the game's story.

I wasn't bothered by the inventory system or by the main quest. Uncharted planets were annoying indeed.

Final Fantasy VIII

Magic is not permanent, and using it weakens it's junction power.

Final Fantasy X

Having to go through all those tedious mini-games, such as the 200 lightning bolt jumps, to get each characters ultimate weapon.

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (and Morrowind) for having a levelling system that actually rewards you for choosing Major Skills that you don't use all the time.

To elaborate for those who don't know what I'm on about:

You have two categories of skills - major and minor. Major skills start out at a basic value of 25% and minor skills at 5%. As you successfully use the skills, they improve. Improve any combination of your major skills by 10% and you go up a level.

Now here's the thing - you can improve minor skills by any amount without levelling up. Which means it's perfectly possible (though involves a lot of skill grinding) to improve, say, your skill in casting Destruction spells to 100% and still be a 1st level character. Since monsters increase in difficulty as you level, the game rewards keeping your level low whilst bumping your minor skills way higher than your major skills. Especially since some skills naturally improve a lot faster than others as you use them all the time (putting Athletics as a major skill means you'll level very quickly since it is used any time you run or swim!).

Halo 2 and 3: Vast improvements over Halo but why did they have to change the button for the fuel-rod cannon on the Banshee to the EJECT BUTTON?!! The former layout was so intuitive for me that even today I can accidentally kill myself by forgetting in a panic (they could at least have made it so you couldn't eject unless below a certain altitude...)

Deus Ex
- a lot of the voice acting, especially in the Hong Kong section, and that infamous moment towards the end of the level in Everett's penthouse (if you play it right).

About my only real gripe with the game. The Hong Kong voices are absolute crap. If the producers couldn't cast authentic voice talent they should at the very least have avoided clichéd Hollywood "Eastern"-type voiceovers. They sound horrendous.

The bloke who voiced JC and Paul sounds like he's bordering on comatose 90 percent of the time. I know they're way cool highly trained agents who don't freak out easily, but the complete lack of expression in their voices at times is kinda offputting.

Other than that, my only complaints about DX are that the big choice really isn't a choice at all, and that the game ends.

World of Warcraft

- Can be mind-numbingly repetative sometimes.

- Not the entire game is reasonably accessible to all styles of play. Very casual players will never see the ends of any storylines because they will never have good enough gear for endgame.

It is quite hilarious when at key moments in the game JC tries to act emotionally, including the "A BOMB!" moment. At least he tries to give Paul more of a "human" personality, especially after the first act's Big Plot Twist™.

Then there's the whole "What a shame" phenomenon... :guffaw:

Only one I can think of is the lack of a single player campaign in Sins of a Solar Empire.

Rock Band 2 - lack of easy to implement stat tracking. Random crap... like keeping a running tally of how many notes I've hit. I'm sure it's over a million, but how about 10 million... Will I ever reach a cool billion? Inquiring minds want to know! Also, it would be nice if they could give a non-censored profanity option for all the DLC. Nerfing lyrics in music is a big no-no in my book. They finally fixed the hammer-on chords though in the latest patch, otherwise that would be on the list.

Paradise Burnout, trying to get that one person to come and join the other 7 who are all waiting patiently to complete a 8 player freeburn challenge, and not go round in circle indefinitely, drive in the opposite direction, just sit there doing nothing.
