It's amazing to think how horrific this whole "Ceti Eel" concept was/is, especially for Star Trek. We're used to it now, given that it's been around for 36 years...but this is some pretty terrifying stuff. I can't imagine how this would be rated PG today if it came out....

Until TWOK, most threats faced by the Enterprise crew were... abstract. There are exceptions. Khan himself in his original appearance, methodically taking control, cutting off life support to the bridge, putting the crew through watching their ship-mates die one by one on a viewer screen... but TWOK made it all feel visceral and real. Suddenly, the crew feel vulnerable. Mortal. And the threat is actually terrifying.

It was actually rated a 15 in the UK at one point on VHS, in the years before the '12' certificate was introduced.

My view is it's probably the most graphic trek film in terms of violence and gore, but it's never gratuitous, and I think helps lift the film away from it's traditionally campy source material and gives it an adult feel that I've always appreciated. It's one of the reasons I think it's always ranked so highly, and rightly so.
