Impress your friends and confuse your enemies with this piece of totally useless, but still kind of cool, trivia.
This next month of October 2010 is going to be somewhat unique for Who fans - or if not unique, certainly it will be the last of its kind for a while. That's because for possibly the last time we're going to have four of the famous Doctor Who logos in active service in officially licensed capacities.
Most franchises just stick to a single logo - think Star Wars, for example - but Doctor Who of course changes its logo every few years. And what's kind of endearing is these old brandings are not often forgotten and are sometimes brought back for different projects.
So in October 2010 we're going to have:
The current Matt Smith logo appearing on Doctor Who Magazine, a couple of spin-off books, an audio release in the UK, etc.
The David Tennant logo will be appearing on IDW's final Doctor Who issue featuring the Tenth Doctor, as well as the long-delayed North American DVD release of Dreamland and the Specials soundtrack.
The Paul McGann/Jon Pertwee logo continues to be used in multiple areas: the Big Finish audio dramas, the BBC Audio releases of classic-series soundtracks, and BBC Video's DVD releases of classic-series episodes (the Revisitations box set comes out in the UK in October).
AND: the Tom Baker/Pertwee "diamond" logo is back for the next installment of BBC Audio's Fourth Doctor audio dramas.
(Since no logo is on screen it doesn't really count, but it's still worth noting that on top of all this the menus for classic-series DVDs continue to use the version of the Doctor Who Theme associated with the "neon tube" logos of Tom Baker/Davison and Colin Baker.)
Although it can be confusing for newbies, I think this is rather cool, myself. I remember a year ago there were reports the BBC was going to try and standardize everything under the new logo (including classic-series DVD releases) but I'm rather glad they didn't. Variety is the spice of life, after all!
The TARDIS Wikia website has a pretty in-depth discussion of the different logos over the years:
