The WB/DC Cinematic Universe Thread

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Marvel has one such thread... why not DC? Now that some of their projects are going full steam ahead. I also think that Star Wars should have a new thread encompassing new episodes and spin-ff films.

But, back to DC.

Wonder Woman has been given a director for her stand-alone film!

I really hope they give her classic costume as well as her new one. Sure, it looks a little tacky, but I'm sure they can find a few scenes where it can work..

The costume they went with already seems to be faithful enough to the classic one (even down to her having the skirt instead of shorts), just adapted more for the screen and given a lot more detail and texture. So I can't really see them needing a different version for the 20s or whatever.

Although I do think it would be cool to see her in the cape at some point.

I get the purpose of this thread conceptually, but it seems to me that discussion of director hirings and costuming for already-announced movies are best left to said individual films' threads. We know what the overall planned movies through 2020 are, and already have an 8-page thread, active in the past three weeks, on that announcement. I like the clearer name of this thread, so maybe that earlier one should be continued and renamed/merged with this?

Wow, Will Smith as Deadshot is a surprise. The guy who told Tarantino he didn't want to star in Django Unchained because Django doesn't actually kill Candie takes a part in an ensemble second-tier DC property? Didn't see that coming.

A little more information from that link for those less inclined to click. The cast for Suicide Squad has been revealed:

Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flagg
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress

I feel like Courtney could potentially give a good performance if he ever got a decent script and director. I mean, I'm not excited about him, but I'm not ready to write him off yet. Smith as Deadshot makes me raise an eyebrow, and not for race reasons before anyone jumps on that. His persona just does not seem to fit with what the character should be. Delevingne is an unknown entity to me. Otherwise that cast seems pretty good. Leto as the Joker should be interesting. It's interesting that they're going to introduce the DC Movie Universe version of the Joker in a film without Batman. Though, I guess you can't have Harley if you don't have the Joker.

Wow, kinda surprised to see actors like Leto, Smith, and Hardy in this. Although it's not really your traditional superhero movie either, so that might have been why they were more open to the idea.

In any case, it definitely makes me a LOT more curious to see this movie now.

Will Smith is the Fresh Prince of Belle Reve.

Very surprised to see him taking a role in an ensemble film like this, but maybe after the last few disappointing roles he's going for a reinvention.

I definitely think Jared Leto has the acting chops to take on the Joker role, and Tom Hardy is always solid, but I'm a little concerned about Will Smith. I like him a lot and he's a good actor, I just hope he doesn't overshadow the whole thing and turn it into a "Will Smith Movie". This needs to be an ensemble piece.

The other three actors I'm unfamiliar with, but hopefully they'll each be a good fit for their role.

I am cautiously optimistic.

Margot Robbie is most famous for playing Leonardo DiCaprio's wife in The Wolf of Wall Street. I can vouch that she's hilarious in that.

Cara Delevingne is one of the major contemporary supermodels. She's filmed a couple of roles recently, though none yet released.

Jai Courtney is, well, I think he's a block of wood, but many people insist he was good on Starz's Spartacus.

Any team that includes the Joker is definitely living up to the name "Suicide Squad"....

Ugh. Jai Courtney. I can't stand that guy.

Still. And interesting cast. Except for Jai Courtney.

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully being surrounded by scene-stealers like Smith, Hardy & Leto will force him to up his game. That, or he's going to be swamped by the rest of the cast.

I hope also that Smith is content for this to be an ensemble cast and won't want it to turn into Deadshot plus surrounding cast.

This movie and the approach DC is taking makes me think of the Green Arrow movie David Goyer was supposed to be developing a few years ago. It was to be called Supermax and would've seen Oliver framed and sent to a Supermax prison, surrounded by super villains and without his bow etc. I think it would be a good companion piece for a film like this, albeit that it might be a bit too similar.

To be honest, while perhaps Suicide Squad won't be "Will Smith and some other people" I can see them putting a bit more of the focus on Deadshot than on the rest of the team, similar to how they handled it in Batman: Assault on Arkham.
