I suppose the same way that human beings in just about every action movie made now survive impossible falls.

There is usually some (implausible as it may be) explanation, such as tumbling over things to slow them down, or falling on something that breaks the fall. Here, they just fall for several seconds, and then she's fine because ah... he caught her while also falling? And then he freezes to death but gets better.
