The Undiscovered Country felt like a big episode of Scooby Doo.

I enjoyed Star Trek VI. I love cloak and dagger, and this movie had it in spades. Also, the soundtrack was fantastic. I love the opening intro from the first intonations right into the Praxis explosion. Oh, and Captain Sulu on the U.S.S. Excelsior, also made this movie worth seeing again and again.

... dress West up as a Klingon. Surely there would have been plenty of real Klingons who would jump at the chance to shoot the president?

Yes, but that would require further negotiation with "the enemy". And therein is the irony of the movie: that renegade members of Starfleet, and Romulan and Klingon Empires had been cooperating to prevent... longterm cooperation. Suggesting that cooperation was going to be possible for everyone.

That's why I find the Colonel West revelation strange. It seems to undercut that idea that all three races were cooperating in the conspiracy when you change the Klingon conspirator to another Starfleet officer. Yeah; obviously Chang was a big part of the conspiracy too, but the original ending of the movie had conspirators from all three races at the conference for the actual assassination attempt.

It's not that the change wrecks the ending or anything; it just makes me wonder why? What did someone think was wrong with having the assassin be a Klingon? It seems to make more sense than having it be Colonel West in a mask.

Cartwright (and West if he escaped) would have wanted to stay in power even after the Klingons were found guilty of murdering the UFP President.
