The ultimate Trek show?

Every fan has his favorite trek show, but they will also admit that no show is perfect. Since trek's hiatus on TV I have thought of the combination of elements that a new, modern series might have. This is the point where I felt the best version of Trek really may not have aired yet. This is where I'm hoping the new series will lead..the ultimate Trek!

  • Some elements: Any Trek show that narrows down the open format that allows for multiple genres within it and the widest range of explorations will probably not be the ultimate show. They've been shown the way and I think the format of TOS and STNG which started things is the best way to go.
  • Topicality. Like it or not, Trek shows mirror reality. It's not essential for every episode to do this, but commenting on issues in an entertaining fashion is part of Trek. I think in modern TV, it's best to not be too obvious or audiences will be insulted.
  • Serialized episodes are not a must in my book, but since it is fairly unusual for trek to do them..and in fact have never done a solid season of serialized episodes without stand-alones--and if the story is compelling enough--then it might become must-watch tv to follow along.
  • Technology without detail. Show it to me, don't tell me. One could argue the overt use of technobabble in later Trek shows reduced the overall appeal to casual fans. Taking a cue from JJ-Trek, they can do tech without spending inordinate amounts of time on it. TOS and most of STNG also limited it's use of it.
  • In the very first Trek Bible, action-adventure is stated as the essential format. This doesn't preclude drama, but the show needs to appeal to our sense of adventure. Pacing is more important than sheer action, but that's necessary too.
  • Any new show will have modern production values. Obviously. This will be the first series either shot at 2K or 4K and will be shown in 1080p from the very first second of air time. This requires attention to detail and almost movie quality FX. A 13 episode format allows for a higher budget per episode. It might be the best looking show on TV.
  • Humor. It should be endemic to the events. The show should be drama and should contain humor, but not so jocular that it can't be taken seriously, nor so dark that it feels like NuBSG.
  • The show can argue points through dark subject matter but the show itself should not be "dark". I think Trek is unique in that most series argue their messages through positivity and a evolved perspective
  • Casting. Wouldn't it be nice if you like EVERY crewman from the main cast all the time? Some ST series come close, but I'd like them to take particular care with this.
I'm happy I can discuss the ultimate series with a show on the way instead of just wishful thinking.

If you'd framed your argument differently I might have left the thread here in GTD...but since you specifically invoked the upcoming series at beginning and end, I'm bumping this thread over to the Future of Trek forum, where discussion of the new show belongs.
