The Trouble with Reap the Whirlwind

I just bought Open Secrets at a bookstore a few days ago, because it grabbed my attention, but I haven't read any of the other Vanguard books. Some series don't absolutely require that you read the prior installments to know what is going on, but I am starting to get the impression that I will be hopelessly lost not having read the others. Is that the case, and should I order the older books before attempting to read the latest one?
What have you got to lose by making the attempt? ;)

Open Secrets has several pages of recap right up front. Really, you should not be hopelessly lost.

^ The recap will make it possible for new readers to jump right in.

That said, you really should read the previous three books. Because they rock.

What?

Well, the fact that my local bookstores are crap and don't carry any ST titles that are more than a year or so old makes it a tad more difficult :(

Oh well, Amazon it is!

You are aware the best way to find things out is to ask a question (which you evidently do given your query) so why don't you ask someone in the bookshop and order the books you want in, do this often and they may start stocking more books of your liking.

Wait, what? Where in my quote did I tell you to do something "a tad more difficult"? What I was trying to say was, just open the book you have in hand and start reading, and don't worry about being lost before even bothering to expend the effort.

Was it the smilie that threw you?

Concerning "Amazon it is!"

I almost always buy from Amazon, if for no other reason I do not have to pay sales tax and I get free shipping. As for other stores, I only have the big box (Borders, B&N) around, no Mom and Pops.

Yikes, I certainly didn't mean to come across as snarky or sullen! All I meant was that ideally, I would like to go ahead and read the other Vanguard books, but I haven't seen them in my bookstore any time recently, which is why I just bought the new one without worrying about getting the older ones. It seems as though I won't be too lost, so I may just go ahead and read this one and worry about backordering the others later. I'm fairly anal retentive about reading serialized novels in order, but the TNG relaunch, for example, was I think much easier to read if you had missed earlier books in the series than the DS9 relaunch. I was just curious where Vanguard was on that scale.

And yes, Dimesdan, I am aware I can special order books from my bookstore.

They do indeed! I love this series; I had forgotten just how damn good it is until I started reading it again. I'm currently on page 338 of RtW, and eager to continue with OS.

David, I'm curious to ask (and if I missed it on your website I apologize) but who would you 'cast' to be Admiral Nogura? Long, long ago I recall reading rumors that there was talk of getting Toshiro Mifune for TMP, but the scenes were never filmed (as far as I know).

^For what it's worth, the excerpt from Open Secrets in Star Trek Magazine used an image of the late Mako to represent Nogura. I'd never thought of that before, but it seems ideal.

I hadn't thought of him either, but I have to admit, he would be a great choice (at least as far as the books are concerned).
