The Trouble with Reap the Whirlwind

Encouraged by the popularity and favorable reviews for the Vanguard series, I've decided to take a chance. I have a question before I launch into the series. Why is Reap the Whirlwind so hard to find? It seems to be out of print while the first two Vanguard books are still in print and can be found at nearly every bookstore I go to. (I'm in Canada where ebay and the Amazon Marketplace make finding and shipping RtW kinda pricey)

Why is it out of print while the others are in print and selling well? I'm reticent to dive into the series when the third installment is such a pain to find. I don't want to miss a thing.

But, yeah you definitely don't want to miss that one, all sorts of big and important stuff happens there.
 
^ The short answer is: a clerical error.

There was a mismatch between an ordering number for retailers and the book's ISBN, and it wasn't caught until very recently. It apparently happened some time ago, resulting in a backlog of unfilled retailer orders for the book.

I was told it would be fixed by now, but the wheels of progress turn very slowly in such a large organization as Simon & Schuster.
 
Well that sucks.:confused: It is good to know there will more in the bookstores eventually. Thanks David Mack. :)
 
I bought one of Amazon market place for 20 pounds about two weeks ago, as I had to find out what happens!! To compound matters it was actually my third copy of Reap the Whirlwind that I had bought! The first one I left in the pocket in front of your seat on a flight to Amsterdam and the second copy was destroyed when my backpack got soaked in a rain strorm.

The copy I have now will not leave my house!!!

Well you can't be on a fault line in this country, but are you on a flood plain or the like?
 
My lucky day! I'm at the only used bookstore in town that sells tie-ins. They have shelves and shelves of Trek. They had only two David Mack novels. Warpath and Reap the Whirlwind! I grabbed them. 5 bucks each.:devil:
That kind of thing never happens to me.:shifty::)
 
Yeah I am not tempting fate, I will finish book 2 tonight and then start book 3, hopefully nothing bad will happen!
 
I've made a habit of grabbing these as soon as I see them. There are a couple of other trek books I want that I didn't get straight away and now they're pretty expensive at the usual sources:( - I'll have to have a look on Ebay.

I'm spoiled. I'm used to the Star Wars EU where no matter how poorly received your novel is, it's going to be on the shelf for at least a decade (or longer). There is a luxury in that for the writer and buyer. With Pocketbooks novels go out of print so quickly. This especially would be a problem with a series like Vanguard where for the time being, the third installment is a hard to find. I've never used ebay and the Amazon Marketplace so much in my book shopping.
 
I've had RTW sitting on my shelf for quite awhile but hadn't gotten around to reading it yet. Then I spotted Open Secrets over the weekend and decided I needed to catch up. I just started RTW last night; I'd forgotten how good this series is.
 
I'm having the same issue. I came to Vanguard late, as I usually only read the main Trek stuff (TOS, TNG, & DS9, VOY...with ENT suddenly in that mix lately!), but decided to give Vanguard a go and LOVE it. But it's driving me batty that I can't find Reap the Whirlwind.

Evidently, a couple of retailers have taken note...check this out:

Hey, I'm not the only person having this problem! I ordered it several months ago and I *still* have it on backorder with Amazon proper, because, as much as I love my Star Trek novels, I'm not paying $71.00 plus shipping to a secondhand bookshop. Hopefully they'll fix it soon...I need to decide if I want to buy Open Secrets.
 
The only other suggestion is to purchase the eBook for a lot less then used copies of the paperback.
 
I got lucky and two weeks ago stumbled upon it at the Half Price Books store. Also found the entire Destiny trilogy as well. Having said that, I order the latest Vanguard book from Amazon yesterday brand new.
 
I have a question about the Vanguard Minipedia at the back of Reap the Whirlwind. Is it full of RtW spoilers or do I consult it as I read? I ask because it was mentioned in another thread that it contains RtW spoilers.
 
^ It does, unfortunately, contain spoilers for Reap the Whirlwind. Originally, I wrote it as an in-house reference for the editor and authors working on the Vanguard series. At some point in the production process, my editor, Marco Palmieri, decided to include it as part of the book. I did my best on short notice to revise it and remove spoilers, but I didn't catch them all. Mea culpa.
 
Thank you Mr. Mack. Glad I posted. Gee, that coupled with the isbn confusion must've been more than a little frustrating.
 
I just bought Open Secrets at a bookstore a few days ago, because it grabbed my attention, but I haven't read any of the other Vanguard books. Some series don't absolutely require that you read the prior installments to know what is going on, but I am starting to get the impression that I will be hopelessly lost not having read the others. Is that the case, and should I order the older books before attempting to read the latest one?
