Which of these series would you like to have seen?

Singer's Star Trek: Federation and Star Trek: Titan.

And of course, #IStandwithAxanar

I personally would like an “Assignment Earth” spinoff, although you would have to rename the cat! You could not continue to call it 'ISIS'. Thankfully a fan production is working on that:

Star Trek: Federation is a neat idea. I hope that when the new series comes out it will likewise be set further on in the future (after voyager). But not so far into the future that they can’t have some good Trek cameos. I also like the idea of a darker, more edgy Federation that needs to get back to its roots and core values.

While I had heard of most of these, the "hospital ship" series was news to me. My favorite would have to be Federation, followed by Titan (with younger actors playing the Rikers).

Thanks for the video.

I thought the mention of franchise fatigue was interesting. Marvel have pushed their multiple movie and inter-related TV series franchise about as far as you can go (and plan to push it even further), and don't appear to be exhibiting any fear of franchise fatigue. It seems they're happy to ride the wave right up until it crashes. Perhaps there was a little too much caution within the Trek franchise, back then? Maybe that second dark age could have been avoided.

Another interesting point was the increasing conservatism of the proposals as time went on, with the only really innovative idea (and one that didn't require a reboot, which is always good. Reboots are too much like rebranding, which rarely goes well) was Singer's Federation. I haven't yet checked out startrekff.com so won't comment on that.

But it's interesting that the proposals became progressively more circular and self-referential, rather than pushing the boundaries. Compare that to the Battlestar Galactica reboot which was fearless, by comparison, and was helmed by a Star Trek alumnus!

Taking the broad view of all the concepts covered in the video, I think I would hope that the new 2017 show is more like Singer's Federation and less like Abram's... well... anything.

Like Tracy Trek above, I would vote for either Hopeship or Federation. A mission with a totally different emphasis, like the former, would easily support many divergent plotlines and ideas. I think it would also be an excellent vehicle for substantive character development and the drawing of interesting interpersonal relationships. Federation could be fantastic by seemingly turning so many Trek tropes on their head. Would we even need to be terribly cognizant of past canon to be able to find fascination in this brave new world? Maybe in slight and infrequent retrospective references, but on the whole, this would easily open up a distinct and newly defining partition in the Trekverse. :techman:

"Franchise fatigue" was the actual excuse given by Rick Berman for Enterprise's failure when the cancellation was announced. I'll admit, I've been predicting the downfall of the MCU for a few years now based on Trek's saturation in the 90s, but it seems to be going stronger than ever. Some experts are even claiming Marvel has a brighter future in movies than DC does.

Franchise fatigue played a factor, but if the quality of writing were higher nobody would have cared. Yeah, people were quicker to give up on Enterprise because Voyager instilled the expectation of mediocrity. But a vast majority of the audience just plain thought it sucked.

Yes, I agree with this. A '70s version of Trek would have been superb. Check out the space1970 blog sometime for coverage of sci-fi movies and TV shows of that time. That gives an idea of what might have been. *sigh*
