The Trek Movies?

Only the bits actually seen in the movies.
That's true. That being said, I'd still recommend reading them if you have any interest. Storywise the novels can often be superior to the movies themselves. The Star Trek III novelization is a prime example.

^Because Vonda McIntyre was going off the shooting script for TWOK, where Sulu would have become captain of the Excelsior after helping out with the training cruise. Rather than fix her mistake, she kept continuity with what she'd already written. J.M. Dillard subsequently kept that going in her novelization of TFF.

Sulu was actually referred to by the rank of captain in the novelizations to TWOK, TSFS, TVH, TFF, and TUC.

This promotion has been revised down to Commander for the Signature Edition omnibus, "Honor, Duty, Redemption", of the ST II, III and IV novelizations. Unfortunately this also means that, at some point after TMP, Lieutenant Chekov surpassed Lieutenant Commander Sulu in rank.
