I was wondering if this was the very first time that someone has worn a Starfleet uniform in space?

Entertainment Tonight yesterday had William Shatner on set for an interview and they showed him that picture. He loved it and thought that it was very inspiring.
They also asked him about Leonard Nimoy passing away. As he recollected their friendship I thought he was going to burst into tears.
