The Tonight Show w/ Conan O'Brien (6/1/09)

So what'd everyone think? I thought the opening bit was pretty mediocre, but the edited video clip of Biden whispering to Sotomayor was laugh-out-loud great. Other than Will Ferrel's entrance, his appearance was kinda kind flat too. Good to see Andy Richter again though.

Anyone else catch the show?

I thought it was pretty good, it was classic Conan humor. He did look a little bit nervous up there at time, but that's to be expected and I'm glad that he didn't change anything about his style.

He looked way nervous.

I liked his opening line about how he piked the riht time to make the move. How he's on "the last place network, moved to a state gone bankrupt, and the show is sponsored by GM". That one made me lol.

I made sure to watch it. I like Conan (not a regular viewer) and host changes at The Tonight Show are a rather infrequent occurrence. Overall I thought it went pretty well, especially for the first show. I'll be curious to see how things turn out in the coming months as the production gets more polished. It shouldn't take long to figure out how much freedom the network is giving him.

I fell asleep some point after Ferrell came on, but I enjoyed the studio tours segment. The running across America thing went on a little long. And yeah he did look a little stiff and nervous.

I totally forgot about and went to sleep early last night!!! I'll probably watch via youtube or something later.

I missed Jay Leno already, I think NBC is making a BIG mistake.:(

So this week there were some memorable bits, but none as great as two worth mentioning:

1) Every thing he talked about with Twitter. YouTwitFace...Classic

2) Super Mario Set :guffaw:

Good first week.

I wonder if Pierre Bernard had anything to do with that Super Mario backdrop? I can't wait for a Recliner of Rage segment, there just has to be one of those at some point.

It was Leno's choice to leave. He was planning on leaving anyway, though it's odd that he's just going to be doing the same show 90 minutes earlier now.

I was NEVER Leno's choice to leave, he was forced out to make room for Conan. Leno had been attacking NBC for awhile on the show because he was fired. He was going to move to ABC, but NBC didn't want that so they destroyed their network to make him happy and just gave him the same show at 10pm.

I can understand you not liking it, but in what reality was this not a successful opening?

I still miss Johnny Carson. Leno was a good stand in, but I never really liked his style.

Wow, the Tonight Show is actually funny again. Haven't felt that way about the show since Carson's heyday.

Conan didn't seem a bit nervous to me. As I recall, Leno, who had hosted "Tonight" many times, seemed much more nervous in his first show as permanent host.

Good luck to Conan. I think his tenure has the potential to greatly exceed Jay's "placeholder" era.

Conan's essentially doing the same show he's been doing for the better part of two decades. And comes this fall, Jay Leno will be his lead in. (With the news sandwiched in between, to be accurate.) For all intents and purposes, NBC has simply bumped their line-up forward.

Its still The Tonight Show, with lots more people watching than watched Late Night and much more pressure from the network for higher ratings. Also, Conan is now going up against Letterman instead of Craig Kilborn or Craig Ferguson, or test patterns.

It may look like just a bump up in the schedule to you, but the stakes are much higher for Conan, Leno, and NBC.

Smart of Conan to continue doing what people loved on Late Night. One of Dave's mistakes was changing his show for a perceived "different" audience at 11:30.
