The TARDIS shooting set - finally complete!

At the recent convention, a few lucky (bastard) attendees got to visit the set for the TARDIS. Various videos are on YouTube. Here's one that shows something interesting:

And seen (briefly) in context here:

The TARDIS has been modified yet again for the better. Last year they replaced the nondescript railings with fancy aluminum tubing rails, and this year they've finally FILLED IN THE GIANT GAP IN THE SET with some wierd spiderweb coral and yet another exit. This hole was previously used for easy access in for the camera and crew, as they generally shot from that direction; now that the hole is finally filled in the TARDIS finally exists as a true 360-degree set, for the first time since the TV movie (and for only the second time ever). Almost all previous iterations of the console room featured half to two thirds of a complete set, using camera trickery to suggest that the set is complete.

Furthermore, there's now a third set of stairs down to the lower level from the main level. And perhaps best of all, the big nondescript metal wall has apparently grown some coral doodads to mesh it more with the rest of the set. The whole thing is still a big pastiche of varying styles, but at last someone can actually walk into the console room and have it LOOK like it can be a full set.

Well, at least until they look up and can see the ceiling of the studio the set is sitting in...

The heck with the console room. The new show's been on for seven years now and we've only had one episode that explored other parts of the TARDIS. I want to see more of what's beyond those interior doors.

I'd like see some actual rooms, not just corridors. That's one thing I did like about the 80's TARDIS. We saw corridors and rooms.

^Heck, even back in 1963's "The Edge of Destruction," the third storyline ever, we got to see the sleeping chambers, a sitting room, and the like.

^I have heard a rumor that they will be redressing parts of the the Cardiff Brewery (of SA Brain & Co) and using it as the Eye of Harmony set....

(..... OK, so that is something that I just made up!...'DON'T PANIC')

I agree with you all... It is far past the time when we should be seeing more of the interior of the TARDIS. More than just extensive corridors in "The Doctor's Wife" (although it was great to see the previous Console Room!). It is such a tease to know the TARDIS has such an extensive interior and to never be shown any of it!

Given the nature of the TARDIS and the quirkiness of both the Doctor and "Idris", we could see almost ANY kind of room, allowing filming an existing room without needing to spend money on building a set. TPTB could be VERY creative in choosing something very interesting....

That's not quite true. "The Doctor's Wife" isn't the only episode to take us away from the Console Room. "The Christmas Invasion" showed us the TARDIS wardrobe. :)

I've heard it said, and I've never quite been able to decide if this was serious or a joke, that the BBC didn't want RTD to show TARDIS bedrooms because that might mean that the Doctor and Rose were knocking boots.

At least Matt Smith's TARDIS has corridors off his Console Room -- and we know that there are bedrooms, a wardrobe, a library, and a swimming pool. The Eccleston/Tennant Console Room apparently had no exits at all (we saw the reverse angle in "Voyage of the Damned") except for the main doors.

They did some clever editing during series 1 to 4 plus specials

Tenth Doctor regenerates on the left side of the TARDIS near the door

Matt Smith is filmed on the right side near the console computer monitor. He's far away from the door.

We're suppose to think we're looking from the back of the console room wall

Which is why I said "explored other parts of the TARDIS." I deliberately chose that phrasing to exclude "The Christmas Invasion," because I don't think a passing glimpse of the wardrobe counts as exploring, and because the wardrobe was only one part, not "other parts," plural.

Well, the original series was far more restricted when it came to that question, but they still showed various characters' rooms, such as Romana's, Adric's, and the one shared by Tegan and Nyssa. So I find it hard to believe that would be the case in these more open-minded times. Then again, the modern Doctors have been portrayed as romantic figures much more than their predecessors, so maybe the concern is greater now? (Although it was pretty obvious that the Fourth Doctor and Second Romana were engaging in some hanky-panky in the TARDIS, since the actors' real-life involvement at the time came through in their interactions onscreen.)

And a sickbay ("Cold Blood") and a kitchen ("The Curse of the Black Spot"). And at least six squash courts remaining after he jettisoned squash court 7, the swimming pool, and the scullery room in "The Doctor's Wife."

I don't care what is inside the TARDIS. The stuff outside the TARDIS is much more interesting!

I'm with Christopher. I'm dying to see more of the TARDIS interior. One of the many great things about "The Doctor's Wife" was this aspect.

I know a lot of people don't like the sequence, but one of my fondest childhood Doctor Who moments was of The Doctor and Leela roaming around the brick-walled corridors in The Invasion of Time. I want to see more of this (not necessarily brick walls, but you get the idea) and what we saw in episode one of Castrovalva.

Assuming you mean "The Invasion of Time," that was my least favorite exploration of the TARDIS interior, because it was just some school or something and didn't look a thing like the TARDIS interior. I much preferred it when they built actual sets.

I quite enjoy the novelization of "The Edge of Destruction." To flesh out a 50-minute story to novel length, the author added extended sequences of the characters exploring the bowels of the TARDIS and trying to figure out what was wrong with it. It was really cool, with all sorts of fantastic settings they could never have afforded to show on '60s television (particularly with the infinitesimal budget the BBC gave the show).

While I was happy that we finally got to see the deeper interior of the TARDIS in "The Doctor's Wife", I must admit I was not pleased with the final realization of the corridors. No, I knew we wouldn't get the kind of thing we saw in "Logopolis" and several Peter Davison stories, but what we did get looked sub-par, almost "fan film-ish" compared to the main console room. It was something about the "finish". It also didn't help the six sided shape made me think of MST3K's "door sequence". I can imagine the Doctor dashing down its length shouting, "We've got 'movie sign'!"

Sincerely,

Bill

I agree. Not crazy about them, beyond the sheer satisfaction of finally seeing something beyond the console room (and the wardrobe). For one thing, there didn't seem to be any side doors, any rooms that the corridors connected to.

"Hello! I'm the Doctor, and these are my friends Crow and Tom Servo."

You've given me an idea, but it'll be this evening or tomorrow before I can act upon it.

Yes, I meant The Invasion of Time. :o

However, I maintain that there's nothing wrong with what we saw of the TARDIS interior in that serial. The interior is so vast, who's to say what can't be in there? From the imaginative to the boring. Either way, as a kid, I was wowed by that sequence.

Big Finish's audio plays "shows" quite a bit of the interior, including actual landscapes (as heard in The Settling and Three's a Company). Hell, they even revisited Nyssa's old room in one of the recent Nyssa/Tegan/Turlough trilogies.
