This is one of my favourite TNG eps, actually. The mystery builds nicely, with just enough clues for Picard to slowly piece it together, and a bit of humour along the way. The revelation at the end is devastating, and John Anderson did a brilliant job. Picard's response is then perfect too, without any moralising or judgment.
One of the most underrated eps, IMO. And I agree about the psychological effects of music getting stuck in one's head...whatever the last song is that I hear somewhere, it's in my head the rest of the day until I hear something different. Drives me nuts too sometimes.

^ I agree, it's a great ep. Very "classic". Rates among my favorites for TNG.
I really liked this episode too. I tend to like stories that hinge around a "concept," so this is a good one for me, even though it does have some pacing issues when you're rewatching it.

Anybody know the name of the song Deanna hears playing. I know what she went through. I get insomnia and when I do it usually is accompanied by a song looping over and over in my head. Never a complete song but just bit of one, like:

Good episode. And as a bonus, Enterprise D unleashes a full barrage, the kind we never see from E, Voyager, or Defiant 
The other thing I like about the ep is it has a Twighlight Zone-style ending. We didn't have that many "surprise" endings in the show that were reminiscent of Zone eps, actually, so for that reason alone, I enjoyed it.
This is a fantastic and criminally underrated episode, in my TNG Top Ten, maybe even Five. The ending sends chills down my spine every time I see it, and altogether it's a really atmospheric mystery that also has a space battle, exploration, classic Worf one-liners and a theme. In short, what every ST episode should have.
Just watched it last night. Nice episode with an eerie feel to it.
However, I was puzzled by the way Picard concludes Kevin must be an omnipotent being. I mean, how did he know? He was so sure he even let the hostile ship fire at the house. And I also didn't really understand why Deanna heard the melody in her head. Why was that?

Kevin 'planted' the melody in her mind to drown out her empathic abilities.
Amazing amazing episode. It's one of the best TNG episodes for sure. John Anderson turned in a really powerful performance. IIRC, he did this episode sometime after his wife died so the grief he showed in this episode was most likely a reflection of his own.

I didn't know that. Its good to see some good can come from grief like that.
Even though Picard was, by now, pretty sure of what he was dealing with in Kevin, the Enterprise was in no shape to defend the planet if Picard had wanted it to. The last time the two ship met, it kicked the ever loving snot out of the Enterprise and IIRC, at this point Enterprise still didn't have any shields. If you re-watch this scene and the one before it again, you'll see that Picard was very spacific on the only condition that the Enterprise would leave. Upon his return, watch everyone's, but especially Picard's reaction to the alien ship. While everyone (except Picard) is shocked by what the alien ship does, and then how easily (one photon torpedo) it is destroyed, especially after their last encounter, Picard just sits there knowingly.
Love this episode as well. By far one of the best of TNG, and Trek overall, IMO.

This episode is hard to forget. When he describes how he destroyed the entire alien race, everywhere, it was just chilling.
Great Worf line: "Nice house, good tea".
If you have a song going through your head that you just can't get out, I have a cure. Unfortunately, the cure is worse than the problem though. Just start singing the "It's a Small World" song from the ride at Disney World in California and the memory of all other songs will quickly fade. Of course, after having this song go through your head for a few hours, you might be ready to wipe out a McDonalds with an Uzi
, but hey, at least the original song is no longer bothering you.
