The success of Star Trek '09

On other posts, most (definitely not all) have ranked ST'09 highly, although commonly below II, VI and/or VIII. Generally good/great, but not necessarily the absolute best.

Conversely, the 96% 'Fresh Tomatoes' speaks to how highly this flick was regarded by the, shall we say, 'general community'.

It seems to me that while both, trekkies(ers) and non-trekkies generally think this is a great movie, the general critics thought of it even higher than trek fans.

As a longtime fans I have some definite quibbles with the movie. I would certainly put it in the top 4, but would probably keep it below II, VI and/or VIII. Still, I thouroughly enjoyed it.

So, forgiving resets, scientific inaccuracies, contradictions, nitpicks and the likes, the beauty of the movie is how much it has re-penetrated the culture, something later incarnations of Trek were unable to do. For this I am grateful. Are you?

Absolutely. I haven't enjoyed a Trek movie this much since TUC which is my personal favorite of the Trek films.

Definitely grateful. It was a thrill to be in a packed house theatre watching a Trek film, where everyone seemed entertained, a select crowd got and reacted to the historical references, while the rest also enjoyed it. Not to mention the applause at the end. Complete night-and-day contrast with the reaction I experienced watching the last film. And the spirit of adventure returned, which I last experienced from Star Trek movies with First Contact.

I also liked having a large crowd who enjoyed the movie, but was also in the presence of fans getting the 'inside joke'/historical references. It seemed as if the entire crowd could get that there were 'layers' to this movie, even if they did not know the specific references...
