The Struggle Within blurb

8of5

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Hot on the heels of Christopher's recent announcement of the Talarians playing a part in his Typhon Pact novella, the Simon and Schuster listing has been updated with a blurb. (At least I think it's hot on the heels, maybe it snuck out a day or two before!):

An original e-novella in the acclaimed Typhon Pact series! The Enterprise-E is on a diplomatic mission to the Talarian Republic, the last holdout in the Federation's efforts to expand the Khitomer Accords in response to the emergence of the Typhon Pact. In the wake of Andor's recent secession, the Federation is more concerned than ever with strengthening its alliances. The Talarians have been a tenuous potential partner at best, given the history of conflict and mistrust between them and the Federation. But the negotiations between Picard and the Talarians are disrupted by a growing public protest of those who are demanding greater rights—and before long, it becomes clear that the dissidents are not limiting themselves to nonviolent means….

I'm pleased the Enterprise is involved; I've become quite fond of the Destiny era TNG crew.

No, it wasn't there this morning... :)

Sounds good, looking forward to it, even with having to get it in eBook.

The blurb is focusing on the Enterprise's mission in the novella, naturally enough, but there's a parallel plot that's more directly connected to the Typhon Pact. Jasminder Choudhury and T'Ryssa Chen go undercover on the capital world of the reclusive Kinshaya to investigate a different kind of dissident movement that could shift the tenuous balance of power within the Pact and tip the scales toward peace or war.

I decided to mock up a cover. I was originally going to make a cover I might like, but then for some reason got distracted by the idea of making one that would actually fit with the series, and before I knew it bam:

I rather hope the real thing doesn't follow the rest of the series, as I found the Typhon Pact covers some of the least inspiring we've been dealt in some time!

 Great picture of Picard. Looks like he might be experiencing a struggle within his digestive system.

So it's a spotlight on Talarians as well as Kinshaya? Great. :) That's two underexplored political players given a little day in the sun. I'm glad all the mid-range powers are finally being fleshed out.

The sad thing is that the actual covers don't even look any better than what you probably did rather quickly.

Really, $6 for a novella? You're crazy, S&S.

No more crazy then the overinflated prices for the individual SCE/CoE stories.

But then, that's not just crazy, that's insane.

What's sad is that even at that price SCE/CoE apparently never broke even for eBook sales.

Maybe they are using The Struggle Within to test the waters of the current eBook buying market now that there is much greater market penetration for eReaders and tablets.

After being screwed over on two occasions by failing eBook DRM and losing over $100 worth of content, I refuse to buy more eBooks unless they can easily have their DRM removed. Until then dead trees for me. But I do hope the eBook program can be a success to allow for up greater diversity and more story slots in the book line.

Which makes sense, because why would people pay $6 for a novella when they can get a full novel for the same price? (Well, could at the time SCE/CoE was ongoing. Still can, in print, if you wait for a sale.)

That would be now. ;)
