The Spy Who Doesn't Love Me

FabiusMaximus

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Principal photography finished and yet little to no information forthcoming from Corporate Headquarters. Aside from the day one photos of Quinto in long ears, the rain-coated extras, the shots of the sword-wielding Sulu and the inexplicable surrounding sets, the Academy shots with blue screen and “antique” vehicle, the Iowa car wreck, the realistic shuttle pics, and of course the official teaser and related “interior” shots of the E and interviews of signed cast members (have I forgot anything else?), there has been little else (in terms of substance) to munch on from this film. No leaked script, no plot details, no attributed asides from primary or secondary cast or crew.

So, what say you to this level of security? Is this a good thing? Are you happy with JJ’s mystery box? And to what to you attribute to this level of in-house security in today’s age of the internet, cell phone quick pics and relentless “be the first” school of journalism? And more importantly, is the word already out there? VIC from SCREENRANT indicated weeks ago that he and (he alluded to) many others in cyberspace who knew much of the plot of this film. So why do they sit on the information for this film when they usually “spoil” form what they know?

I actually find the secrecy refreshing myself, but I still wonder why for this movie. Any ideas?

As a self loathing spoiler whore I'm glad that I have no info to spoil myself with.

As someone who prefers to avoid spoilers as much as possible, I love all this security. I wish more movies would be kept under as tight a lid as this one has been.

I'm very glad they have been so secretive. I don't WANT to be spoiled too much, but if the really big juicy spoilers were out there, I don't know if I could resist reading them. Then of course I'd probably have to stop visiting this board altogether because it just takes one poster being thoughtless to ruin it.

Personally I like the way they put out things not too fast and manage to keep the important aspects a secret. So, if they continue with this tight lid policy, this will be the first Trek movie I see without knowing nearly everything about it in advance. And that's a good thing.

Now, why couldn't they at least release an image of the new crew in uniform?

Abrams is counting on the entertainment reporters tripping over themselves to get a story about his movie, especially as the release date grows near.

Unfortunatly the release date is still forever away.

I would've liked to have seen an official photo of the crew in uniform. Or at least head & shoulder shots.

The crew in uniform?

I suspect JJ's fuming over the fact the Toy Fair showed action figures in the original uniforms (supposedly) and that the actor playing Chekov said there was a scene of them all on the bridge 'in the red, blue, and gold'.

Don't hold your breath while waiting for any actual photos that aren't spy pics.

I'm pleased that we have no spoilers about the actual plot...but I do wish they'd release some general info like uniforms or bits of technology as appetizers.

I'm kinda getting bored with waiting, to be honest, and am not as interested as I once was. Too much time between info tidbits.

That's the fun of it. I remember back in Nemeshit days how the movie was practically known line by line, scene by scene months in advance. Though the movie was beyond horrible it seriously made me deflated when I saw it because the plot was known. I am glad Star Trek 11 and other movies nowadays have tighter securities. I love to be surprised.

I'm glad very little has leaked. It would be nice for people to actually go and see a movie for a change before passing judgment based on a leaked script. I doubt the security will remain tight before next May however.

Same here. Once the spoilers begin to pour out, I'll feast on them all and then hate myself in the morning. :(
I remember reading the Nemesis script over and over and actually convincing myself that it was going to be wonderful.
I'd be really happy if JJ destroyed all of the scripts after filming was done and had a TR-116 waiting for anyone who leaked anything ahead of schedule.

So, what say you to this level of security? Is this a good thing?
I'm perfectly happy not knowing the plot, but I would like to see a cast photo of the original crew sitting on the bridge of the Enterprise. That, and a good exterior shot of the Enterprise will tide me over until May '09.

---------------

I think all the secrecy is great. It's making the fans crazy! My only worry is that, since the release is still over a year away, things will start to leak out. A year of post-production is a long time. I really think that the longer Paramount sits on this, the higher the chances of photos, plot details and other things getting out.

I'm right there with you man. A cast photo on the bridge would be nice, but other than that, I don't want anything else leaked. Because I'm weak and I'd read it.

There's only one reason that they'd fail to let that sort of thing slip. And that's actually a very GOOD thing, from my perspective.

You can let all sorts of things slip, as long as what you let slip isn't going to "spoil the surprise" on any level. Isn't that right?

So... the fact that they're not letting us see much of stuff that really oughtn't be particularly significant to our enjoyment (or lack thereof) of this film... costume design, set design, prop design, ship design (except for the "context not quite clear" trailer shots)... that says something to me.

What it says is that there are surprises in the film that might be ruined if we saw that stuff before seeing it in the theater for the first time.

My belief... and it's just my belief, just like anything anyone else here (even the would-be "experts" who'll tell me to just accept what they say, because "that's the way it is!")... my belief is that we're going to see things in the early part of the movie that are set post-TNG... then things that are set pre-TOS... then things that are "off-kilter" TOS-era... then things back to normal TOS-era by the end... then back to post-TNG at the coda for Nimoy's "farewell" sequence... then return to the "as we remember it" TOS era in the final scene... sort of like what was done in "Titanic."

So... we're not seeing sets because there are multiple versions of some sets. We're not seeing costumes because there are multiple versions of some costumes. We're not seeing ships because there are multiple versions of some ships.

I can't see any other reason that the design would need to be kept secret... except that the design is tied directly INTO the story, so if it were let to slip, the storyline would also be let to slip as well.

Good points, Cary L. Brown. I think you may be correct in your assumptions.

But what of the other question? Does anyone believe that there are those who run the movie fan sites with knowledge of the plot and are just sitting on it? Again, it is commendable in a way -- not wanting to spoil it for everyone, but that seems to go against their usual "we're the first to report that..." mentality. I may be wrong about this. Perhaps they are as much in the dark as we are.

At this point I want to hear something about the movie. I don't even care if it's a rumour that turns out to be fake. I want to hear something about the damn movie. If we don't hear something soon, I may have to start a rumour myself about Nero teaming up with a renegade Andorian with bad-ass ice powers.

I heard the rumor that Nero is teaming up with a renegade Andorian with bad-ass ice powers! This just has to be true! Spread the word!

It's not like we aren't going to get any news between now and the movie's release. Orci said over at TrekMovie.com that they have a plan for a controlled release of information, but they are reevaluating their schedule due to the change of the release date.
