We are now getting more and more information on the remaining specials. Has it been announced yet if all 5 specials will be realeased as a box set with all the usual extras we normally get with the series ones

Unless they've suddenly decided they don't like making money they will be. The only question is how they'll handle "The Next Doctor" on the Blu-Ray version.

I must have missed something but I don't recall hearing a law passed forbidding the mixing of HD and non-HD on a Blu-Ray release. They'll either include it in standard def or up-convert it like they do with most other releases of SD in Blu-Ray.

If they haven't figured it out yet, then fans of anything made for TV before 2005 are well and truly screwed.

I think a box set release is inevitable though I'm picking up the individual releases anyway, just for the hell of it cuz they're cheap. As one of many who feel Blu-Ray is overrated anyway, part of me kind of hopes the DVD box includes The Next Doctor and the Blu-Ray edition doesn't, but the BBC wouldn't do that to fans.

Cheers

How do you figure that? Plenty of shows were broadcast in HD well before 2005. To use ER as an example, it's been broadcast in HD since 2000. And even the earlier seasons were shot 16:9 on film. The standard DVDs have all been 16:9. Since it was all shot on film they can easily rescann the film for a Blu Ray release.

The only shows that will be in trouble are shows that worked on video tape, or shot digitally in less than HD resolutions. That means a lot of late 80s and early 90s shows. Ironically, the classic Who can probably be rescanned for HD while the 2005 relaunch through The Next Doctor will never be available in true HD.

Sadly I fear they're going to be complete douchebags by releasing The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, and Waters of Mars on individual releases, but only make the two-part finale available in a box set with the previous three specials. Oh, consider the implications.

^ This is what I think...and we'll only get the normal bunch of features including a pod cast commentary on The End of Time.
