the sound of LOVE!

We all know that when we hear the swooshing sound of ships, or hear the phasers effects, or whatever, that it doesn't make sense in the vacume of space. But having watched my Bluray of 2001? I am glad that we DO hear these sounds. 2001 is a great movie, and the classical music works well...but I'll take the thunderous explosions of a planet being blown-up, or the sound of the Enterprise swooshing past the screen, over some classical piece of music any day of the week. Sound effects, and I mean explosions and things like that is space, add to the movie experience, even these sounds could not possibly be made in space..


what do all think???

Agreed. Aside from 2001, was there another movie that did space effects minus the sound? I think 2010 even had sound-effects. I'm trying to think of one. Maybe OUTLAND did? can't recall.

Not a movie, but Firefly used silence in space to great effect. And even the new Star Trek movie used it at a couple of points, though mostly for dramatic effect.

nuBSG was fairly correct in that the sounds usually corresponded to what the pilots would hear internally, that is, in their cockpits. When people were blown out in space via decompression it was a silent process, which just made it more eerie. Same thing with the ships firing-you heard what the pilot heard so the gunfire was conveyed-until the camera pulled away from the pilot. I thought it was well done.
