New Line is developing a movie prequel, currently titled “The Many Saints of Newark,” penned by David Chase. Chase, who created the hit HBO series, wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Konner.

Some of the fan-favorite characters from “The Sopranos” are expected to appear in the film — set in the era of the Newark riots in the 60s, when African-Americans and Italians were adversaries.

Will the movie end abruptly and show a black screen and confuse a lot of people?

If it's taking place in the 60s, Tony will be a child, and the action will possibly focus around Junior, Livia and Johnny Soprano? Maybe we meet Eckley Soprano?

Paulie, Richie and Pussy would be in their 20s, so they could appear as gangsters. Dickie Moltasanti would still be around at this point, as well as Bobby's father and Feech Slaman.

And the boss would be DiMeo, the referenced character who was boss but in prison at the beginning of the series.

Since the entire cast will be new actors, why bother calling it 'Sopranos' at all? Other than names and 'brand', it will be generic Gangster Movie #235... Part of what made 'Sopranos' so special was the wonderful ensemble of actors that brought their characters to life. This project seems like a cash grab. Not very optimistic about the outcome... YMMV

The actors were an important part of it, but I'd argue the writing is more important.

If Gandolfini were still alive, I wonder if we would have seen a post-series story instead? Start off with Tony's release from prison after serving 10 years, trying to "go straight" and put his life and family back together, but the old ways are still easy and tempting for him.

I assumed the reason Silvio was left in a reversible situation was in case they wanted to do a movie.

I can't believe Tony would ever seriously consider going straight though, I think the story would be about trying to regain his power.

Let me tell ya something. Nowadays, everybody's gotta go to shrinks, and counselors, and go on “Sally Jessy Raphael” and talk about their problems. What happened to Gary Cooper? The strong, silent type. That was an American. He wasn't in touch with his feelings. He just did what he had to do.

Hoping for a Gary Cooper shout-out in this. Actually, I recall rumors and rumblings of *exactly* this when the Sopranos ended in 2007. It was meant to be a prequel series set when Junior Soprano was just coming up in the world and his misadventures with Johnny Boy Soprano - loosely associated with The Sopranos by telling a story that took place 35 years prior.

I wonder if it will come out before, in between, or after the Deadwood and Rome movies.
