The Sombrero reference -- what did I miss?

I can't help but notice some sombrero references scattered about the forum, especially in a few people's avatars. And Tan Ru vehemently declares he has been "Sombrero free".

OK, I searched for "sombrero" in the titles and nothing came up, while searching entire posts brought up far too much noise.

There must have been some kind of big joke/prank/brewhaha that involved sombreros at some point... is there a thread or threads that someone can reference that would explain it all?

Well, I just liked sombreros, being a Mexican telenovela fan. The avatar with the Christmas lights on it gave me a chuckle.

Never thought to look at that "Blue Warp Nacelles" post before. Aggg... I've gone through a few pages and... zikes! I wish I'd never seen it. I'll never look at the NCC-1701 the same way ever again!

Ah, I get it now.
I couldn't stand Dougherty... so never remembered any of his lines. The only good part of his role was when his face was stretched.

Was he actually eating a Starfleet or Bajoran ration or piece of food in that episode, or did you Photoshop the chewing in yourself? If so, excellent work!

Yeah, that looks Photoshopped to me. If he had a video loop of him chewing, you wouldn't see pixel action isolated to just his mouth and jaw.
