The Simpsons Season 2 Episode "Bart gets an F"

I rented this DVD recently from Netflix as I love watching the Simpsons (especially these classic episodes!) and was wondering why in this episode was everyone so worried about Bart passing the 4th grade only to keep him in there for the next twenty years? :)

The magic of Television? Maggie (the baby) is now something like 22 years old. Bart's in his mid-thirties ie, Homer's age.

Does that blow your mind, or what?

Because The Simpsons was interested in keeping the characters in perpetual status quo. Bart is ten; Lisa is eight and Maggie is around one. That's their unchanging identity; and through the magic of animation they never start growing like pesky child actors do on live-action sitcoms.

Metatextual concerns aside, I think "Bart Gets an F" is my favorite episode. That scene where he breaks down crying because he really, genuinely tried, and then blurts out a bit of applied learning and impresses Mrs. Krabappel enough to get him a barely passing grade, is really moving, and I get teary-eyed just thinking about it.

It's just a reminder of when the Simpsons was more of a family sitcom than the sad joke farm it is now.

Actually, Bart is supposed to be the same age as me, so he'd be 28 now.

My local Fox affiliate is airing most of the episodes in order, and they're currently on season 4...1992.

You can't even compare now and then in terms of quality. I knew it had gotten bad...but ugh.

And in tonight episode, a good couple of timeline shifting. Marge voted for Carter twice, meaning she was born in at least 1958, making her at least 18 in 1976, voting age. She was listed "homemaker: 1980-Present" on her resume.

That would make Marge at least 50 years old based on this episode.

Well like that one episode where they were going to show a gay character on the series, I was like, don't they already have one? (Smithers, I assumed)... and the character they portrayed as being gay (one of Marge's sisters) never showed that before in any episode. As I recall, she liked a male actor's rear-end once :)

There was an episode ages ago, way before that episode you mention, where they had a gay pride march and there was a float which was called something like "staying in the closet" and there were two doors with a guy and girl behind, and they chanted "We're gay, we're glad, but dont tell mom and dad", and from the voices the guy is clearly Smithers and the woman is clearly Marges sister, Patty I think.
