The Simpsons: Post-Movie

Mr Light

Right after the movie came out, there were interviews where the writers said they would bring characters and events from the movie into the TV show. They said that Spider-Pig would join the show, as well as Lisa's boyfriend Liam.

Well, we're almost at the end of the season and Liam hasn't appeared... Spider-Pig made two blink and you'll miss cameos to my memory... and they didn't even reference the destruction of Springfield.

Now, I know this was never a show heavy on continuity, but I feel this is a vast wasted opportunity to reinvigorate a stale show. I still like the show, I still laugh. But how many interesting new story ideas could have spiraled out from the long process of rebuilding the ruined town? How many things could you do with Spider-Pig, or Lisa's boyfriend who dad is probably Bono?

You'd think they'd be desperate for new ideas after all these years. Why keep in the same static form?

I dunno, I think the cute cameos are fine. I would like to see Liam again, though. They produce these episodes pretty far in advance, so possibly for next season as they may have been waiting for fan response to him before deciding to base an episode around him and Lisa.

That said, I think this season has generally been an improvement....still a lot of up and down, some episodes with few laughs, but the one this past Sunday was one of the best I've seen in years, I was laughing pretty consistently through the whole thing.

I don't watch new episodes of The Simpsons anymore, so I shouldn't really care, but god, that frakking Irish kid in the movie was simply offensive.
Any second when he spoke made me want to slice my ears off with rusty razor blades and claw my eyes out with broken glass.
Awful!!!

I thought the movie was pretty crap IMO, and I saw the DVD in HMV a few weeks ago on sale for only £5. I was tempted to give it another chance, then I thought about that Irish kid whom I'd managed to forget about, and quickly put the DVD back on the shelf

No, the season opener referenced it in the opening credits.

I thought the movie was kinda lame with only a few good gags.

I did think hearing Marge say. "Throw the goddamned bomb," was hilarious. That and the itchy and scratchy bit at the beginning.

Why didn't they bring back Hank Scorpio, or make Burns the villian again.

^ I remember reading that the character was originally meant to be Hank Scorpio but that he didn't have any reason to hate Springfield since he wasn't located there in the series. Plus they were worried people wouldn't know who he was.

^ They did, technically, a few brief cameos.

1.) Fell over because Smithers put toothpaste on his toothbrush
2.) Was the only person in town with power and released the hounds on Doctor Hibbert, Apu, and Chief Wiggum when they asked him to restore power to the town.
3.) Had his mansion ransacked and asked Smithers to commit suicide to cheer him up.

Plus they were worried people wouldn't know who he was.
Well, people didn't know who Kargil was either. It's not that important. All one needs to know is that Hank Scorpio is an evil mastermind with a positive work ethic and good benefits for his employees.

That said, I'm glad they didn't use him. The villain in the film felt like a cut-rate Scorpio, and I wouldn't have wanted that exceptional character so cheapened. :)

This said; it was a shame the film didn't have more of Mr. Burns. Everyone knows who he is, and he's the quintessential Simpsons villain. Even if he isn't the antagonist, he needed more effective scenes than the ones he got.

I would have LOVED Hank Scorpio as the villain. That should be the sequel. Or Burns doing something evil. It seems like Burns barely exists as a character on the show anymore, let alone a villainous one.
