The 'scanner' was of course the TARDIS viewscreen. Looking at the new set photos, I wonder if we'll see a return to a more traditional scanner, as there appears to be one roundel near the door that almost looks like it's some kind of screen.
The old scanners for the first three Doctors were pretty much just TVs, but eventually with the advent of CSO they made it more of a 'window'. The TV movie gave us two scanners, one that mainly listed the destination and a cool 360 one on the ceiling. With the RTD era we got a small computer on the console with sticky notes often posted on it in Gallifreyan text.
So it looks like we're back to something similar to the Mcgann (minus the panorama) console if my guess about the roundel is right. Two scanners, one for destination, one for looking outside.
